The installation of a new traffic light pedestrian crossing will improve road safety in the vicinity of the El Esparragal cemetery (09/12/2020)

| The works have started today and will be developed on Avenida de Alicante, in front of the Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles Cemetery | The Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, through the Traffic Service, works to improve road safety in El Esparragal.Councilor Rebeca Pérez has visited the works that have begun today on Avenida de Alicante, in front of the Nuestra Señora de Los Angeles Cemetery, where a new traffic light pedestrian crossing is being built to regulate pedestrian and road traffic.The area where action has begun to improve road safety is integrated into the road network of the municipality of Murcia, the road being an old national highway (the N-340) ceded by the State to the Murcia City Council.Attended a neighborhood demandThe mayor Pérez, has pointed out that "with this action we attend a demand much requested by the residents of El Esparragal and we continue with our commitment to undertake actions that improve the quality of life of the neighbors, in this case, by increasing security in the surroundings of the El Esparragal cemetery ".In addition to installing a signalized pedestrian crossing, the road traffic of the intersection and the pedestrian traffic generated by the cemetery and the existing bus stop in the area will be jointly regulated.The new installation has been designed in its entirety to improve the safety of pedestrians and drivers, trying to interfere as little as possible in road traffic, by providing the pedestrian crossing with a button and vehicle detector loops on the perpendicular branch of access to Avenida de Alicante.Without affecting the traffic flowIn this way, the phase for said incorporation will be activated according to the real demand for vehicles, interfering as little as possible in the traffic of the main flow of Avenida de Alicante.The works contained in this project respond to the implementation of new traffic light installations with which the road safety of the different road users is guaranteed, especially the most vulnerable, such as pedestrians.In addition, for the protection of pedestrians against possible falls down the slope, a 1 meter high protection railing will be provided.

The action will be completed with the modification of the existing vertical and horizontal road marking to adapt it to the new regulation of the intersection.Investment of almost 40,000 eurosThe City Council will invest 39,131 euros in these works, which will be carried out by the Murciana de Transporte SA company within a month.These works are undertaken by the Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth because among the competences it has attributed, in terms of urban mobility policies, are those of preparing studies aimed at defining the criteria of balance between road and pedestrian traffic, as well as planning and ordering the traffic of all types of vehicles and people on urban roads, and planning, scheduling and authorizing traffic signs in terms of location, typology and dimensioning on municipally owned roads.
