Murcia recognizes the work of the more than 300 volunteers who provide their support in the campaign against COVID-19 (04/12/2020)

| The City Council hosts the institutional act on the occasion of the International Volunteer Day, which is commemorated tomorrow, December 5 | The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Social Rights and Family, Pilar Torres, presided over the institutional act this morning on the occasion of the International Volunteer Day, which is commemorated tomorrow, December 5, and which was decreed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1985, to recognize those people who, of their own free will, dedicate their time and efforts to others, with altruistic and solidary actions.“More than 300 people make up the City Council's Social Services Volunteer team, who are carrying out essential work in an altruistic and generous way, especially in these difficult times, providing their support and attending to situations arising from the health crisis and that we are experiencing, ”said José Ballesta, who added that“ they are the best representatives of the generosity and solidarity of the people of Murcia ”. In March, the Consistory began a campaign against the health emergency caused by the coronavirus, in which the Social Services Volunteer team - which has a total of 307 people - provides support to people who are in a situation of social vulnerability , such as the elderly, people with disabilities or those who are dependent and live alone, as well as families in a situation of home isolation.More than 200 people have received help since MarchIn this campaign, volunteers carry out different actions, such as acquiring basic necessities, walking pets, taking out the garbage, distributing food in collaboration with the Segura Food Bank and Cáritas, conducting telephone support and participating in the sewing of masks , as well as in the acquisition of medicines and pharmaceutical products - as long as the pharmacy has not organized the distribution of the medication among its clients.During the event, held in the Plenary Hall, a manifesto was read, which recognized the work of Murcian volunteers, who, since March, have served 213 people in situations of social vulnerability.Support from more than 30 social entitiesIn parallel, more than 30 social entities and NGOs have made their own volunteer work available to the City Council, for the coordination of groups of people who want to carry out support tasks in the distribution of food, basic necessities and school supplies, as well as for the production of masks, screens and other protective elements, which have been donated to different organizations.Civil Protection, Cáritas, Segura Food Bank, Esperanza Telephone, Solidarios, Espinardo Scouts group, the Official College of Psychologists, Red Cross, the Federation of African Associations of Murcia and the FADE Foundation are some of the entities that have collaborated.Likewise, it is worth highlighting the specific projects that have been launched to alleviate situations of need, such as the Olla Solidaria de Alquerías, in which the Civil Protection of Alquerías, Boca Pizza and Taberna el Saro joined to distribute 200 daily stews, or the Solidarity Kitchen of Santa María de Gracia, in which the Rugby Club, Cruz del Sur Scouts and a chicken grill were brought together to distribute 200 daily rations of food.More actions carried out by volunteersIn parallel to the device deployed for the coronavirus, volunteers also carry out different actions, such as:-Awareness campaigns on solidarity values ??aimed at society in general and specific sectors of the population - childhood and adolescence, the elderly, etc.

-.-Participation in specific Social Services projects: Spanish classes for foreigners, home accompaniment for the elderly or people with disabilities, support in administrative procedures, participation in school reinforcement programs and support for the elderly, etc.-Support and collaboration in projects promoted by voluntary entities in the municipality of Murcia.-Social recognition actions for volunteering, giving it relevance and valuing its contribution to social well-being, with the production of videos of awareness and recognition of voluntary action.

They have also collaborated, for example, with the Anonymous Solidarity Award, organized by the University of Murcia and the Volunteer Platform of the Region of Murcia.
