Murcia launches ´Mioo´, a new 100% sustainable home delivery service for packages (02/12/2020)

| The alliance between the City Council and Vectalia, in collaboration with Correos Express, will allow the final delivery of the package to be carried out in an electric motocargo which will allow to stop emitting 1.5 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year | Murcia launches a pilot project thanks to which residents of the urban area already have a sustainable, clean and local parcel delivery service. Thanks to the signing of an agreement between the Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth and Vectalia, in collaboration with Correos Express, the last mile, that is, the last journey to be made in the final delivery of the package, will be carried out 100 % sustainable.

Murcia is the third city in Spain, after Pamplona and Teruel, to develop this initiative. In addition, Murcia City Council will be a pioneer in the country in the creation of parking spaces on public roads intended solely for sustainable last-mile delivery vehicles.

This initiative will begin with a total of three reserved parking areas in the historic center. This new logistics facility will also serve as a return point for undelivered parcels and a post office for the collection of parcels without delivery. The vehicle used for the delivery is a Scoobic electric moped, with a load capacity of 400 kilos, a range of 100 kilometers and a maximum speed of 45 kilometers per hour.

In this way, vans and similar delivery vehicles are replaced, more polluting, noisy and with a greater impact on public space.Furthermore, thanks to this pilot project, the existing potentialities in Murcia for the implementation of sustainable last-mile delivery systems will be analyzed, lasting over time and that could be extended to the entire municipal area.

For this, the companies will share with the City Council results and conclusions of the analysis of the services provided to periodically evaluate the operation of the activity in a Monitoring Commission established in the agreement.More than 400 deliveries per dayCorreos Express has made a daily average of 400 deliveries in the historic center of Murcia in the last month of November.

According to the calculations made, this initiative will stop the emission of 1.5 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year. The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, has indicated that "we continue to promote a change in the mobility of the municipality, one of the strategic lines of the new Mobility Project being the implementation of sustainable delivery systems promoting the use of non-polluting vehicles and of small impact on the urban space ".Pérez recalled that "the municipality's new Mobility Ordinance will soon be approved, a very ambitious document that will regulate the shared use of public space that is committed to sustainable mobility and pedestrians, with an emphasis on last mile travel and cyclology, regulating the movement of goods transport and incorporating new modes of transport such as the electric scooter ".This action, which is framed in the new Mobility Ordinance, is also aligned with the Municipal Clean Air Strategy, the Climate Change Mitigation Strategy and the Local Electric Vehicle Strategy, which promote the use of renewable energies and sustainable development mobility, as well as new transport systems in the city and new mobility models, applying the latest technological innovations to improve the quality of life and the services provided to Murcians.
