The Spanish Neurology Society awards an investigation by UMU professors Trinidad Herrero and Emiliano Fernández on the figure of Ramón Alberca (30/11/2020)

The Spanish Society of Neurology, through the Humanities and History of Neurology study group, has awarded the 1st Protoneuroscience Grant in Spain to the professors of the University of Murcia María Trinidad Herrero Ezquerro and Emiliano Fernández Villalba for their project on the figure of doctor Ramón Alberca Lorente. This award was convened at the beginning of 2020 with the aim of researching and publishing biographies and contributions of Spanish pioneers of neurosciences, people who developed their activity between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

In this way, it is intended to promote research in the History of Neurology in Spain. Ramón Alberca (1903-1967) spent most of his professional career in the Region of Murcia, where he arrived in 1928 after winning his position as director of Asylum, a position he held at the Provincial Hospital of Murcia.

Throughout his career he specialized in the study of different aspects of the nervous system, histopathology, neurology and psychiatry, especially psychopathies. In 1950 he obtained the chair of Psychiatry at the University of Salamanca, which was reflected in the chair of the University of Valencia where he created the School of Training in Psychiatry in 1965, which he combined with the direction of the Murcia Asylum.

In 1951 he entered as a Full Member at the Real Academia de Medicina de Murcia where he was elected president, from 1962 to 1966. He had an extensive scientific production with more than a hundred articles and various essays and art criticisms, of which he is passionate.

He wrote clinical cases, reflections and essays, focusing on causes of diseases, signs and symptoms of his patients, as well as possible treatments.

He became interested in psychopathy and with a special interest in legal psychiatry and psychiatric expertise.

The Psychiatric Hospital of Murcia bears his name and the representation of his bust receives at the entrance.
