The school gardens organize the 1st Scarecrow Contest, in which 7,000 students from 46 schools will participate (19/11/2020)

| The initiative aims to instill among minors an interest in plastic arts, creativity, recycling and the preservation of traditions and the garden | The Network of School Gardens of the Municipality of Murcia, which includes an educational community made up of 7,000 minors belonging to 46 different educational centers, has organized the I Scarecrow Contest, an initiative with which the Murcia City Council intends to instill interest among minors for the plastic arts, creativity, recycling and the preservation of traditions and the garden.The Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, presented this project during a visit he made to the School of Early Childhood and Primary Education (CEIP) Saavedra Fajardo in the district of Algezares, where he supervised the school garden that this educational center has .Navarro has pointed out that "this activity is the starting point of the program that the Network of School Gardens will offer during the course, to promote activities and small challenges to be developed in the school garden so that this is an alternative with which to work the different areas of knowledge that are approached in each educational level ".Motivate participation among studentsThe Scarecrow Contest seeks to motivate the participation of students in the elaboration of a scarecrow, a traditional and friendly element that has contributed so many benefits throughout history to the Murcian garden, doing, among other functions, to scare away the birds, as the name suggests.The three finalist proposals will be awarded.

In addition, there will be two special prizes, for the most original and the most traditional.

This initiative also aims to highlight the school garden as a didactic resource and as a large open-air classroom, so in demand today as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.The Saavedra Fajardo School has a school garden since 2014The Saavedra Fajardo de Algezares school began its journey with the school garden in the 2014/2015 academic year with the support of the local Neighborhood Council and the advice provided by the School Garden Network and since its inception it has been very active, doing all kinds of activities with all educational levels.Among the many activities that the center has been carrying out this year, it has launched a compost bin that will have the function of generating compost that will serve as compost for the school garden and that will be supplied with the remains of it, in addition to the leaves and small branches.
