A mobile application will allow to warn of contaminated green environments so that they are recovered and put in value (15/11/2020)

| This has been the winning proposal of Climathon 2020 and will be included in the Municipal Strategy for Green Infrastructures | The Murcia City Council, through the Local Agency for Energy and Climate Change (ALEM), dependent on the Department of Sustainable Development and Huerta, directed by the mayor Antonio Navarro, and in collaboration with the Environmental Energy Technology Center Murcia (CETENMA), has participated for the fifth consecutive year in Climathon, the largest event in the world that is held to collect proposals to combat climate change.On this occasion, the challenge proposed by the Murcian Council was the contribution of ideas for the elaboration of the Municipal Strategy for Green Infrastructures, which seeks to improve the connection of urban green areas with peri-urban areas and natural spaces, such as the Segura river, the surroundings of the Huerta or Places of Community Interest (SCI).The winning idea that obtained the first prize was the creation of a mobile application that will function as a web map that will promote collaboration and environmental awareness of users through games and challenges.Reinforce social commitment and care for natureThe objective is to reinforce the social commitment to promote the care of the environment through real actions, such as being able to warn of green environments that present a high degree of pollution so that they can be recovered and put into value.This application will seek to promote education in respect and sensitivity towards nature.

The jury also awarded a second prize to the 'Green Remote' project, consisting of the maintenance of green areas and infrastructures using information obtained via satellite.Among the tasks that it will promote will be the optimization of the management of urban, peri-urban areas and natural spaces and the creation of an updated database of urban, peri-urban green areas and natural spaces that exist in the municipality of Murcia.Territorial structure through an orchard gardenUnder the name 'The vegetable garden as a backbone garden of Murcia', this project also received another second prize at the Climathon and proposes the creation of a garden from the vegetable garden to communicate different parts of the city.

Its mission is to structure the municipality in a transversal way, completing urban and peri-urban connectivity through a new green infrastructure.The Councilor for Sustainable Development, Antonio Navarro, has pointed out that "the fifth participation of the City Council in Climathon has been a success due to its high participation and the quality of the proposals provided, which will improve the connection of green areas and natural spaces in Murcia in a commitment to social and environmental well-being ".It should be established that for green infrastructure the European Commission states that it is a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural spaces and other environmental elements designed and managed to offer a wide range of ecosystem services.

It includes green spaces and other physical elements in land and marine areas.Work areas to design the final ideaThe proposals presented during the Climathon had to attend to the following four work areas to design their final idea:-Connection between urban and peri-urban green areas and natural spaces: solutions to improve the connection between green areas and their surroundings, for ecosystems and people.-Green infrastructure and improvement of the identity and image of the municipality of Murcia: solutions that allow creating a link between the green infrastructure of Murcia and its image, serving as an economic, social and tourist reference.-Conservation, improvement, restoration or creation of ecosystem services in green areas: solutions that allow the effective provision of ecosystem services (accumulation of water, biodiversity reservoir, recreational areas, reduction of climatic rigors).-Economic evaluation of the ecosystem services provided by green areas: solutions to be able to economically value the ecosystem services that green areas provide us.One hundred participantsIn Climathon 2020, a hundred people from different professional fields participated, such as entrepreneurs, representatives of companies, professional associations, associations, students and 11 experts in the subject that was the object of study, that is, green infrastructure.Murcia was one of the nine Spanish cities that participated in this year's Climathon along with Madrid, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, San Sebastián, Vitoria, Zamora and Sestao.
