The City Council presents the South Connection project at Climathon as the greatest example of the union of green infrastructures (12/11/2020)

The Councilor for Sustainable Development, Antonio Navarro, presents the ideas of this strategic plan in the largest global event against climate change, in which the Huerta Action Plan and the second phase of the Greenway converge, which will create a corridor natural that will backbone more than a dozen districtsThe Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, this morning inaugurated Climathon 2020, the largest event held worldwide to collect proposals to combat climate change and in which the Murcia City Council has participated for the fifth consecutive year .On this occasion, the Murcia City Council has presented the South Connection project as the greatest example of the union of green infrastructures, since it is a strategic plan whose application will mean the greatest social, economic and territorial transformation that Murcia has experienced in the last century.

with the recovery of more than 200,000 square meters for citizens.Improvements in a territory of more than 70,000 inhabitantsSouth Connection will report improvements at all levels for a strip of territory inhabited by more than 70,000 people and that includes the districts and neighborhoods of Los Dolores, Infante, Barrio del Carmen, Santiago el Mayor, Barrio del Progreso, Patiño, Santiago El Mayor, San Pío X and Nonduermas. For this year's edition of the Climathon, the challenge proposed by the City Council is to gather ideas that will serve to design the Municipal Strategy for Green Infrastructures.

A jury made up of technical experts in the subject under study will be the body in charge of selecting the three winning proposals that will be included in the Strategy. In this regard, Councilor Antonio Navarro has indicated that "The Strategy will create a large green belt that will connect the 4 million square meters of green areas and gardens that exist in the Murcian municipality, the orchard that floods the entire Valley of Murcia, as well such as the mountains and forest areas in the areas of the mountain ranges to the north and south of the municipality, mainly the Carrascoy and Columbares mountains, Altaona and Escalona, ??all with the Segura river as the backbone.Connection of projects for the creation of a network of green infrastructuresIn this context, the philosophy that inspires Conexion Sur perfectly reflects the commitment to connecting green infrastructures.

In fact, this project connects with that of the Vía Verde, which in its second phase will create new pedestrian paths, gardens, green areas and a 3,000 square meter palm grove in Beniaján, increasing the length of the Vía Verde, which will increase from 8, 5 kilometers over 11.5,000 shrubs will also be planted and new street furniture will be installed along its entire route with 350 benches, among other actions.

This action is part of the South Connection because it will connect the districts of the South Mountain Range with the Carmen station, creating a connection between the Huerta and the mount with the Segura river, continuing its route through the city center and reaching Barriomar and Nonduermas , improving the connection of Murcia with the districts, since another priority objective of the Vía Verde is to recover the centrality of the neighborhoods and districts of the south, through greater cohesion between population centers, uniting people, creating cohesion social and economic through the elimination of these barriers. These actions are part of the environmental plan that the Government Team has been developing in recent years.

Apart from the Greenway, South Connection is also linked to the Huerta Action Plan, which proposes the recovery and enhancement of typical environments of the Murcian garden.Guidelines for contributions to the Green Infrastructure StrategyRegarding the Climathon, the different proposals that are presented for inclusion in the Green Infrastructure Strategy must address the following four work areas to design the final idea:-Connection between urban and peri-urban green areas and natural spaces: solutions to improve the connection between green areas and their surroundings, for ecosystems and people.-Green infrastructure and improvement of the identity and image of the municipality of Murcia: solutions that allow creating a link between the green infrastructure of Murcia and its image, serving as an economic, social and tourist reference.-Conservation, improvement, restoration or creation of ecosystem services in green areas: solutions that allow the effective provision of ecosystem services (accumulation of water, biodiversity reservoir, recreation areas, reduction of climatic rigors).-Economic assessment of the ecosystem services provided by green areas: solutions to be able to economically value the ecosystem services that green areas provide us.
