Murcia City Council treats more than 500 pine trees with an innovative method to prevent branches from falling and guarantee safety (10/11/2020)

This non-invasive system allows to inject a substance into the trees that absorb even the sap and that acts against pests, specifically the processionary and larvae, without causing any damage to the specimen and helping to conserve the environmentThe Murcia City Council, through the Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration directed by José Guillén, carries out the application of endotherapy in the municipality.

This non-invasive system allows a substance to be injected into the trees that absorbs even the sap and acts against pests, specifically the processionary and larvae, without causing any damage to the specimen. These works are being carried out in more than 500 pine trees in the municipality of Murcia, thus avoiding that these works are carried out by air, achieving a zero environmental impact. This morning, the Deputy Mayor visited the Ronda Sur lake garden where the work of eliminating the well-known caterpillar of the 'processionary' (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is being carried out.It is a lepidopteran, whose name comes from the particular way of moving in single file that, when it is a caterpillar and has reached maturity, descends from the trees to find a place to bury itself and emerge as a butterfly."From the consistory we act in a preventive way in the presence of this insect and as a priority to avoid its proliferation and inconvenience to citizens", highlights councilor José Guillén.Its treatment is carried out by two methods: a preventive one based on endotherapy and spraying and the other curative, which takes place when the processionary pockets have already appeared in the pines. This process, developed by the STV / Actúa company, consists of a small incision in the trunk of the specimen where a substance not harmful to the tree is injected, which is transmitted by the sap to the caterpillars, causing their elimination and allowing to eradicate this pest of pines. This action is complemented with the placement of small plugs in the holes made in the tree so that it is fully protected.Actions in municipal green areas always follow a scheduled calendar, which begins in October and is carried out by two people for about three weeks. To carry out these tasks, we have all the elements and safety equipment necessary for the correct handling of this type of substances.

In addition, the professionals of the Park and Garden Service have been trained in endotherapy.
