Murcia City Council installs and replaces more than 60,000 square meters of anti-impact flooring (09/11/2020)

The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration led by José Guillén, is carrying out a plan to install and replace more than 60,000 square meters of rubber in children's play areas. This morning, the Deputy Mayor visited a garden located in the district of Churra, where this action is taking place in an area of ??230 m², where continuous pavement is being used with an EPDM top layer that mixes various colors and shapes, in this case, green and red, colors that suffer less wear and tear from the sun."We improve the safety of the little ones and make their stay in the more than 600 children's areas as comfortable and safe.

To do this, we are installing anti-impact flooring, sheltered areas so that they provide shade and can be used throughout the year, perimeter fences and approved children's games that comply with the strictest safety standards "has highlighted José GuillénSpecifically, two types of rubber flooring are being laid.

On the one hand, there are the tiles, which are about 4-5 centimeters thick, are modular and are used in areas where children's games are focused on the little ones. The other variant is to install the rubber continuously, which, as would be done with asphalt, adapts perfectly to the area and changes its state from semi-liquid to solid briefly, preserving its cushioning properties. In addition, the rubber that is being placed in these spaces is committed to the environment.

It is made from recycled and treated tires, which allows to absorb and reduce a percentage of pollution that the area supports. The process to install the rubber is as follows:1- The children's games are dismantled, leaving their anchors for their subsequent assembly once the rubber renewal is finished.2- The SBR base is mixed and spread in the thickness determined by the drop height of the highest set.

This base is black in color, it is smoothed and left to dry to proceed to spread the color layer.3- The color is mixed, these grains are finer to obtain a better finish.

As the color mixes, the design we want is transferred to the SBR surface.4- This top layer of different colors is made separately, one after another, making the design drawings, and is smoothed manually using a trowel and a roller to obtain more uniform finishes.5- Once the flooring has dried, the children's games are assembled.

This process takes between 7 and 10 days depending on the size of the children's play area. The places where rubber has been renewed in recent days have been the Avenida de Europa in Murcia, the Azaleas garden in Barriomar, Fofó garden, Montegrande garden in Torreagüera, Lo Navarro in Cabezo de Torres, Marqués de Espinardo and Senda Picazo in San Antón, among others.'Oasis' the pioneering project that reduces pollution particles by up to 81% implemented for the first time in MurciaThe project has been carried out in the Jardin de Santa Isabel and involves the implantation of paving made from crushed tire rubber impregnated with a photo catalytic agent, an innovative material that reduces pollution from vehicle gases such as nitrous oxide.

This innovative pavement, manufactured thanks to the recycling of 1,250 tires, has been installed on an area of ??285 square meters. The results show that this new pavement can reduce nitrous oxide by about 20%, reducing the level of polluting particles by up to 81%.An anti-abrasive and non-slip flooring that lowers the floor temperatureThe results show that it is an anti-abrasive floor, prevents the growth of fungi (antibacterial), reduces the carbon footprint and surface temperature, eliminates volatile organic compounds (VOC) and contributes to the creation of safe environments for the little ones, as it involves the application of continuous floors. This new pavement also absorbs impacts from falls, absorbs noise and vibrations and its composition materials make it a type of non-slip floor even after the rain.

It is also a low-maintenance type of floor that is very easy to clean.Trials at the German research institute Fraunhofer and field work in Santa IsabelWithin the framework of the Oasis project, they have carried out several tests to verify the efficiency and effectiveness of this pavement (Id-sun), with tests that have been developed at the German research institute Fraunhofer and at the Center for Environmental Studies of the Mediterranean (CEAM) .After months of field study that have been carried out in the Santa Isabel garden, the effectiveness of this product has been demonstrated, since the Aitex Technological Center has validated and certified the results of 'Oasis'.Patent 'made in Murcia'Once the results have been analyzed, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office has validated this novel material as a patent, the crushed rubber impregnated with a photocatalytic agent (Id-Sun), which has been implemented in Murcia by the Murcian companies RNC and Synthelast, in collaboration with the Murcia City Council.Reference in circular economyThe implementation of this project is also an action aligned with the municipal strategy of Circular Economy, since 'Oasis' is carried out through the recycling process, using tires collected in a hundred containers authorized by the Murcian company RNC, distributed by workshops from the municipality of Murcia.

Once collected, the tires are processed and returned to society in the form of crushed tire rubber.
