Murcia participates in the launch meeting of the European HOOP project (05/11/2020)

| For the development of local bioeconomy initiatives | The project has a total of 23 partners, from eight European cities, such as Murcia (Spain), Bergen (Norway), Kuopio (Finland), Almere (Netherlands), Albano-Lazio (Italy), Porto (Potugal), Clube (Greece) and Münster (Germany)The objective is the development of municipal investments that allow obtaining high-value resources from the organic fraction of solid waste and wastewaterMercedes Bernabé: “Our participation in HOOP will allow us, on the one hand, to share our experience and help other cities in this field and, on the other hand, to reinforce and validate at the European level the steps already begun in the elaboration of the municipal strategy of Economy Circular"Murcia is one of the cities participating in the European HOOP project, an initiative framed in the Horizon 2020 line that will help eliminate legislative, technical and economic barriers for the effective implementation of circular bioeconomy initiatives at the municipal level.The City Council, through the technicians of the European Programs Service, has participated in the online meeting to launch this project, which has a total of 23 partners, with eight from European cities, such as Murcia (Spain), Bergen (Norway), Kuopio (Finland), Almere (Netherlands), Albano-Lazio (Italy), Porto (Potugal), Clube (Greece) and Münster (Germany).The project pursues the development of municipal investments that allow obtaining high value-added resources from the organic fraction of solid waste (FORSU) and wastewater.

For this, each city will have a 'hoop' committee made up of local experts that will promote the reintroduction of these products into the economy and society."Industry, science, society and politics come together in HOOP with the aim of improving European urban metabolism by demonstrating circular economy solutions that can be replicated by other cities," said Mercedes Bernabé, councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government.In this way, Murcia will participate as a 'lighthouse' city - leading cities that show the way to others - in this project due to its proven experience in Circular Economy, because it is a pioneer municipality in the drafting of this strategy, as well as its participation in other European projects on this topic: Valuewaste, Cityloops and Enrich.The initiative has nine million euros, of which eight are funded by the European Commission.

Specifically, the Murcia City Council has a budget of 117,000, financed entirely by the European Commission, and with an execution period of four years.“Our participation in 'H2020-HOOP' will allow us, on the one hand, to share our experience and help other cities in this field and, on the other, to reinforce and validate at European level the steps already initiated in the elaboration of the municipal strategy of Circular Economy ”, Mercedes Bernabé highlighted.Finally, an open online platform will be created for the promotion and promotion of the local bioeconomy that will compile the results obtained, making them available to European cities and other parts of the world serving as an exchange of knowledge.
