More than 600 families will benefit from the new Cáritas Food Distribution Center in San Antón (05/11/2020)

| The City Council coordinates the donation of more than 11,150 kilos of food, made by the Association of Supermarkets of the Region of Murcia (ASUMUR) and MercaMurcia | The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Family and Social Rights, Pilar Torres, the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca, the Director of Cáritas, José Antonio Planes, and the Secretary General of Cáritas Diocese of Cartagena, Juan Antonio Illán, this morning visited the second Caritas Food Distribution Center in the municipality, located in San Antón, which opened its doors last week and where fresh and frozen food is being distributed, as well as hygiene products and cleaning the most vulnerable Murcian families for free."The second wave of this health crisis is giving way to a harsh social crisis for which we must be prepared, reinforcing social care and doing everything in our power to overcome this difficult situation", highlighted José Ballesta.During the visit, the Murcian councilor added that "these moments of health crisis make us value, even more if possible, the solidarity and generosity of all the collaborating companies and of the entire volunteer team that is participating in this project, made up of more of 65 people ”.

The event was also attended by the General Secretary of the Murcia Region Supermarkets Association (ASUMUR) and Mercadona's Regional Director of External Relations, Ana Belén Martínez, and the managing director of Mercamurcia, Ricardo Rubio.Specifically, the new center is located on Avenida Abderramán II, at the junction with Calle Ginés de Rocamora.Fresh and frozen food, hygiene and household productsSpecifically, the store has 175 m2, where the products have been distributed in five aisles - dry, fresh and frozen food, personal hygiene and household cleaning products.In total, 65 volunteers are participating in this project, of which 50 carry out their service in the premises, performing functions in the management of the logistics center, replacement of products and care and accompaniment to families, while a team of fifteen people in charge of home delivery to people with reduced mobility.During the meeting, the director of the Cáritas Diocese of Cartagena, José Antonio Planes, stressed that “from Cáritas the current social challenge is lived with energy and hope, knowing that together with public administrations and the business world, capable initiatives can be carried out to reach the neediest families ”.

In this sense, the head of Cáritas explained that “Cáritas has not closed at any time during the pandemic, focusing its efforts on strengthening and expanding projects for vulnerable people in the municipality of Murcia.

Citizens and public authorities will always have us by their side ”.The San Antón Food Distribution Center will open on Monday morning and afternoon, and from Tuesday to Thursday, in the afternoon.More than 600 families every monthUsers of Parish Caritas of San Nicolás, Santa María de Gracia, San Antolín, San Andrés, San Francisco Javier San Antón, San Basilio and San Pedro and families referred by the Social Services of the City Council will be able to benefit from the Galilea Commissary program.

In total, an estimated 600 families benefit from the services of this center each month.In addition, before the end of November, Cáritas will have the El Carmen Food Distribution Center operational, adding to the centers it already has - the Galilea Commissary in the space provided by the City Council and the new center in San Antón.The three centers are resources that are making it possible to increase the coordinated work between Caritas and the City Council, through Social Services, to give the best care to families who need food and hygiene and household products.11,150 kg of food, including milk, cookies, legumes and fruitsThe City Council has managed the donation of 11,000 kilos of products from the Association of Supermarkets of the Region of Murcia (ASUMUR), which groups together Super Dumbo, Mercadona, Consum, Musgrave, SPAR-Upper, Mas y Mas and GranbiBio.

In addition, Grupo Caliche provided its 'solidarity truck' to carry out the logistics of collecting and delivering all these foods.Milk, water, cookies, legumes, such as lentils, and fruits - organic lemons and oranges, tangerines - and soups are some of the essential products donated by the association.

In addition, ASUMUR has provided shelves, shopping carts and the necessary facilities for the opening of both this store and the next one that will open in San Antón.For its part, the territorial delegation of El Corte Inglés has joined this Caritas project.In addition, MercaMurcia has also made a donation of 150 kilos of non-perishable food this morning.

Soon they will carry out a great delivery of fruitful products.Likewise, the Central-West, North and Santa María de Gracia District Boards of Murcia have collaborated in the acquisition of food, to which have been added those contributed by organizations in solidarity with Cáritas.

The assignment of the premises, its conditioning and equipment has been possible thanks to the involvement of the Murcian business community.Close collaboration between the City Council and CáritasAfter visiting the facilities of the Food Distribution Center, the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, and the mayor of Family and Social Rights, Pilar Torres, held a meeting with the representatives of Cáritas Diocese of Cartagena, in which they addressed the collaboration they maintain, to reinforce primary care for families, the reconciliation of work and personal life, and the accompaniment of homeless people as a result of the outbreak of COVID-19.
