The City Council launches a plan to combat vandalism in the municipality of Murcia (19/10/2020)

Presentation of the Special Plan for Cleaning and Removal of Vandalism Graffiti, which will be extended to all Murcian neighborhoods and districts.

The first actions are being carried out in squares and streets of La Flota, responding to the demands of the neighborhood.The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, presented this morning the Special Plan for the Cleaning and Removal of Vandalism Graffiti launched by the City Council, which will be extended to all neighborhoods and districts of the municipality, improving the image of the public thoroughfare and responding to neighborhood demands.

The first actions are being carried out in La Flota, where the Municipal Graffiti Office is working on the intensive cleaning and repainting of six streets that featured vandalism graffiti."We continue working to improve the quality of life of the residents of our neighborhoods and districts, launching, in this case, a coke plan against vandalism graffiti, which will respond to the demands of the residents of the municipality," said José Ballesta , who added that “since the creation of the Municipal Graffiti Office, in 2015, the Consistory has intervened in more than 40,000 square meters, building, in turn, a kind of open-air urban art museum in the streets of Murcia ”.During the event, the Murcian councilor pointed out that "the work that is being carried out in La Flota began three weeks ago and an area of ??more than 1,100 square meters has already been intervened." For the implementation of this initiative, coordinated by the Municipal Graffiti Office and Ferrovial Services, the opinion of the residents and the administrators of the buildings located on the affected streets has been taken into account.Squares and streets of performance in La FlotaSpecifically, the operation has already acted on La Pinta and La Niña streets, as well as around the fireplace located next to the Virgen de la Fuensanta promenade.

Currently, the works are being carried out on Calle Galatea, and will soon be carried out on Calle Lorca and in Plaza Mariano El Churra.Mapping to detect the incidence of vandalism graffitiThe City Council is carrying out mappings in Murcian neighborhoods and districts, detecting the incidence of vandalism graffiti.

So far, more than 140 kilos of paint of different colors have been used, with the new recreations covering more than 600 square meters.-Hydrocleaning.

Cleaning with hot water under pressure using stripping products on the surface to remove graffiti.

210 kilos of stripper and 18,000 liters of water have been used, acting on an area of ??400 square meters with this method.-Repainted.

Cleaning the area affected by vandalism, repainting it.

30 kilos of plastic paint have been used, covering an area of ??80 square meters.112 hours of workTwo members of the Municipal Office of Graffiti, equipped with the paint and the necessary material for the tasks of repainting and painting the murals, as well as a specialist operator - equipped with a van that consists of a high pressure water equipment and different stripping products–, make up the work team of this project.Specifically, the operation has already carried out 112 hours of work focused on the streets of this neighborhood.More than 60 urban murals distributed in neighborhoods and districtsThanks to this device, Murcian neighborhoods and districts already have more than 60 artistic murals.

In this context, the Consistory recalls the importance of the collaboration of the neighbors to keep these spaces clean, with the aim that the actions that are being carried out last over time.Murcia, a benchmark in urban artThrough this initiative, in addition, Murcia begins to consolidate itself as a benchmark for urban art at the national level, with murals such as the one on Avenida Primero de Mayo, 32 meters high and 12 meters wide - hundreds of people have come to the Graffiti interested in the location of the murals to visit them–.
