The cold pavement lowers the asphalt temperature in July by 15 ° C thanks to the Heatland project (08/10/2020)

| Councilor Mercedes Bernabé visits one of the arteries of Murcia paved with this new agglomerate to analyze the results obtained during the summer months | The councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, together with the technicians of the European Programs Service, visited this morning one of the streets paved with reflective pavement or cold asphalt, which is being studied within the 'Life Heatland project 'in order to analyze the results obtained during the summer, as it is the period of the year that registers the highest temperatures.

“Thus, after the measurements carried out by the four towers installed in the area and the tests carried out in situ, it appears that in mid-July, the moment of maximum annual radiation, a difference of 15ºC was reached between both pavements, being less the temperature of cold asphalt ”, highlighted the mayor. The new agglomerate also influences the decrease in environmental noise, which, according to the latest results, is still 3 dB (A), keeping the records that in June and that it would be equivalent to approximately a reduction in traffic by half.Likewise, it is concluded that the luminance continues to be double in streets with reflective pavement than in conventional asphalt, which makes these roads much more visible to drivers and pedestrians, which would save light in public lighting .The data indicates that the reflectance is three times higher and this implies that it absorbs less heat.

It should be noted that this indicator reflects a 40% drop compared to June due to asphalt wear.On the other hand, since the implementation of this project, the cold pavement has lost its yellowish color to give way to a grayish tone."The city of Murcia is being a pioneer in the implementation of a reflective pavement that will contribute to a better quality of life and well-being by reducing the ambient temperature and the soil," Mercedes Bernabé highlighted, adding that "this project it is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (ODS), within the framework of the Murcia 2030 Urban Agenda, and with the City Council's Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Plan ”.

Project 'Life Heatland'The 'Life Heatland' Project (LIFE16 CCA / ES / 000077) is co-financed by the European Union with a global budget of 1,359,221 euros and has an expected duration of four years. Its objective is to minimize the effect of urban heat through the use of new high reflectance agglomerates –cold asphalt, 'coolpavement'– with less solar storage than conventional ones.To do this, last February a total of seven streets in Murcia were paved, of which six were paved with cold asphalt (Monte Carmelo street, Sauce street, Carmen Conde street, Valle Inclán street, Pío Baroja avenue and Pintor Almela street Costa) and one with traditional asphalt (Lope de Rueda street) with the aim of comparing the data obtained through this initiative.Four measuring towers allow obtaining 1.5 million data, recorded every 30 minutes, 24 hours / day and for two years, on the temperature of the surface of the pavement and air, humidity, wind speed, solar irradiation, level of lighting and noise. The Murcia City Council, through the municipalities of Urban Agenda and Open Government and the Department of Development, is developing this initiative in collaboration with the Business Association of the Construction Technology Center of the Region of Murcia (CTCON), the construction company CHM Obras and Infrastructures, the Regional Federation of Construction Entrepreneurs of Murcia (FRECOM) and Cluster of the Construction sector of Slovenia.
