It is ten years since the Campus of Lorca, belonging to the UMU, the great intergenerational center of the Region of Murcia (08/10/2020)

At the beginning of this month of October, the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Campus of Lorca was fulfilled, an aspiration that, like that of the center to which it belongs, the University of Murcia, was a goal long pursued by Lorca.

A total of 130 students began three weeks later, on November 2, to teach and fill the different classrooms and dependencies of the new headquarters of the University of Murcia. That inauguration was made under the mandate of the then Rector José Antonio Cobacho, who described the day as very important, "not only for the University of Murcia, but also for the Region." The work, which cost the sum of 24 million euros, and whose authorship was carried out by the architect Martín Lejárraga, consisted of three buildings located on a plot of 27,000 square meters, including the old command pavilion of the Sancho Dávila barracks . The first of the buildings was used for general services, administration and management; the second was for teaching and practical tasks, including five laboratories, while the third was for a library and reading and study rooms. The Faculty of Social Health Sciences of the University of Murcia was born as a result of a consortium created in 2005, made up of the UMU itself, the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, the Regional Confederation of Business Organizations of Lorca (CECLOR), the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Lorca and the City Council. In the Faculty of Social Health Sciences, degrees in Nursing, Human Nutrition and Dietetics are taught and, for the last three years, the PCEO Sciences of Physical Activity and Sports and Human Nutrition and Dietetics.

To complete the training offer of the center, it is planned to implement the Degree in Occupational Therapy. During this decade, the Faculty has achieved numerous milestones that have ended up consolidating its work and existence, among them the joint Certification of the Rafael Méndez University Hospital and the Faculty of Social Health Sciences as a Center Committed to Excellence in Care, by the Unit of Research in Health Care and Services (INVESTEN), dependent on the Carlos III Health Institute, in collaboration with the Ontario Nurses Association (Canada). The great campus for social health care for the elderly Another important milestone in the existence of the faculty has been the Creation of the Poncemar Chair of Gerontology at the University of Murcia, which promotes training, dissemination and research activities in the field of social health care for the elderly, worrying about the important role that the professionals of Nursing, Human Nutrition and Dietetics and Occupational Therapy, can play in this field.

The Chair collaborates with the City Council of Lorca in the development of the program "Lorca, a friendly city for the elderly", an initiative endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO), which will be an extraordinary opportunity for the Lorca campus in participate in numerous initiatives to improve the quality of life of the elderly in Lorca and the region. Thanks to the development of the framework agreement signed in April 2016 between the University of Murcia, the Poncemar Foundation, the Lorca City Council and the Department of Universities, the construction of the Poncemar Foundation Day Care Center for the elderly began last February.

some works whose completion is scheduled for the end of November and which will come into operation at the beginning of 2021.

The Center is built with a care, teaching and research vocation, in which students of Nursing, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, and in a future Therapy Occupational, they will be able to carry out internships and initiate research in social health care for the elderly. All these actions are aimed at consolidating the Center as a large Intergenerational Campus specialized in social and health care for the elderly, in tune with one of the great challenges facing society in the 21st century, which is the aging of the population, the increase in chronic non-communicable diseases and the population in a situation of dependency, a challenge that this campus is training each of its graduates.
