The Ivy Plan creates green perimeters in parks and gardens and encourages environmental awareness (06/10/2020)

| The objective is to revegetate and re-green the green areas of neighborhoods and districts, all of which is framed in the Hiedra Plan, with which it is intended to upholster dozens of thousands of m2 | The Department of Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, led by José Guillén, through the Parks and Gardens Service, continues to execute the 'Plan Hiedra' throughout the municipality. The initiative, launched by the municipal Parks and Gardens service, aims to revegetate and green the municipality in order to adorn and beautify its image, as well as mitigate the sensation of heat during the summer months.Specifically, in this action that is taking place this week in the Carmen neighborhood, more than 500 hedra helix plants have been planted.

In total, it is estimated that an approximate area of ??between 25,000 and 30,000 square meters will be planted with ivy throughout the municipality, which will have 120,000 ivy. "We improve our green areas and in the maintenance of our municipal infrastructures with the aim of offering the best services to our neighbors and thus improving their quality of life", José Guillén stressed. It is a plant that adapts very well to all types of soils and climates, and in winter it is practically possible to eliminate watering.

In fact, during the colder months with lower temperatures, it is enough to water it once a week, while in the hot months and higher temperatures it is increased between 3 and 4 times to keep the plant properly hydrated. This plan will act in arid areas, depleted of vegetation for various reasons, which will become areas with carpets that grow very fast and require little watering once they settle.

In this way, the ivy not only occupies flower beds, but also settles on slopes, turning those spaces into green places with climbing plants. The Ivy Plan is already underway in different locations, both in districts and in the center.

Of the 60 actions initially planned, so far it has been carried out in the parterres of Calle Greco, Calle Navegante Juan Fernández, Paseo Joaquín Garrigues Walker, in the area of ??FREMM, Juan Carlos I, Malecón and Calle Sol de Puente Bacon, among others.240,000 shrub plants and ivy create green screens in the parks and gardens of the municipalityThousands of specimens already create a natural fence that provides a multitude of environmental and health benefits.

In total, 240,000 shrub and ivy plants will be planted, which create green screens in the parks and gardens of the municipality. This perimeter is already placed in spaces such as the garden of Los Naranjos (Santo Ángel), in the garden of José Antonio Camacho, in Puerta Nueva, in the neighborhoods of San Antón, San Lorenzo, San Miguel, Santa María de Gracia, el Infante and in the Salitre, among others.Benefits and characteristics of upholstery plantsAmong the main characteristics of cover plants are their low size and fast growth.

These plants are highly desired and necessary in gardening when you want to cover large areas of horizontal or vertical surfaces. They are generally kept at a moderate height, are strong, and extend in all directions, covering the spaces around them. But in addition, upholstery plants offer many benefits to the surfaces where they climb or cover, and the main ones are:  • They prevent the land from continuing to erode with the rains, winds and sun.  • They prevent the multiplication of weeds.  • They are a good alternative to common grass in some areas of our garden, significantly reducing the water consumption of our green areas.  • They need much less care and maintenance, thus reducing costs to the public purse.  • They are strong and resistant plants.Ivy is one of those with the greatest capacity in nature to fix CO2, decontaminating the air we breathe.
