Statement from the Rifeños Refugees Association in Spain on the abandoned building of San Pio de Murcia (29/09/2020)

From the Riffian Refugee Association in Spain, we want to clarify to Murcian politicians and public opinion the real version of the abandoned building in the San Pío neighborhood area, Murcia.First, it should be noted that those who inhabit the building are not squatters, rather they are homeless immigrants and refugees, victims of the abandonment of local and national institutions. Many of these people were in NGO reception programs and, given the circumstances and the saturation of the Administrations, they have been taken out of the program. They have been found on the street and with the prohibition of being on the street at the same time during the confinement. If they wanted to comply with the health requirements and the orders of the State, which asked the citizens for total confinement, they had no other solution than to get into an abandoned building. The former petty mayor of San Pio and member of the Municipal Board, José Liza, denounces that dozens of people have entered to live without any type of security, and proposes as a solution the immediate eviction and cleaning of the building.

It is not typical of a democratic politics to see homeless people in difficulties, and deny them all kinds of help.A solution to a problem of this caliber typical of a democratic society cannot go through expelling them to the streets again.Among the people who inhabit this building there are immigrants with a valid residence card, but they have not found any owner willing to rent a house to them, there are political asylum seekers with valid cards who have not yet received any response from the Administration.

The urgency of an alternative to these people is a responsibility of the City Council.Members of our association, together with a group of volunteers from the neighborhoods of Murcia, we have been able to bring them food, clothing, masks, hygiene products and other essential items.

Some volunteer lawyers have offered legal guidance to 46 of them. This citizen platform tries to provide solutions and aid to immigrants and refugees who have been forced to take refuge, once again also in this country, where they have been able to do well.We also believe that it is our duty to condemn the abandonment of the Institutions to these people, to denounce the cuts or even the cessation of the reception programs that have left hundreds of people in this Community alone, denying them the monitoring of their processes of integration, so necessary to achieve a decent life.

We cannot consent to this result.Allowing a person to be without work and without accommodation at this time is inhumane and dangerous, both for them and for the rest of the population, and we ask for urgent alternatives for these people who live in a precarious situation, offering them accommodation and reception programs for true integration.
