The City Council participates in a conference on energy management in municipal policy (29/09/2020)

| This is one of the latest activities within the European project 'Compete4SECAP', funded by Horizon 2020 | The Murcia City Council, through the European Programs Service, dependent on the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, led by Mercedes Bernabé, has participated in the conference on energy management in municipal policy, organized by the Murcian consultancy Eurovértice.This is one of the latest activities within the European project 'Compete4SECAP', funded by Horizon 2020, for which the Murcia City Council, in addition to the Las Torres de Cotillas, Cieza and Ceutí consistories, received the ISO 50001 certification from the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR) for the energy management of five of its municipal buildings: Town Hall, Abenarabi Multiple Use Building, the Economic Services Building in Plaza Europa, the Local Development Agency and the Moneo Building.The conference, which was carried out online, was attended by the director of energy policy, Cristina Lobillo, the coordinator of the Covenant of Mayors in Spain, Miguel Morcillo, and the head of the Department of European Programs of the Instituto de Fomento, Rafael Ataz, in addition to the technicians and workers of the different Murcian administrations.Experts in the field and technicians from the different participating municipal corporations had the opportunity to delve into the matter, addressing the European Green Pact and its involvement in municipal energy policy or the way to activate the change of habits, as well as sharing the different experiences lived throughout the project.

Finally, the event ended with the delivery of the ISO 50001 certificates to the municipalities.The ISO 50001 certification, in the lobby of the Moneo BuildingThe ISO 50001 certification plate, which recognizes the energy efficiency management carried out by the City Council, is located in the Moneo Building.

The councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé, and the councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén, proceeded a few months ago to place them, an initiative coordinated through the European Programs Service, the Smart Murcia Office , the Department of Industrial Engineering and the Local Energy Agency of Murcia."This recognition is one more step towards this process of transformation and change in which the City Council is immersed, such as the implementation of a more sustainable, responsible and respectful model with the environment", Mercedes Bernabé highlighted that “Murcia, as a pilot for the implementation of said certification, attracted the attention of the International Urban Cooperation (IUC), receiving the visit of a delegation of municipal technicians from Guelph (Canada) and Rijeka (Croatia) to advise them in their process of implantation".Implementation processThe project began in January 2019, together with the EuroVértice consultancy, as an advisor to the implementation process, in the five most representative buildings of the City Council, named above.

 Subsequently, a work team was formed with the different services and councils and, under the standards set by the ISO, an investigation process began in reference to the billing of recent years, energy audits, maintenance services and detection of consumption and deficiencies.Likewise, a series of training actions were carried out for municipal workers in the area of ??energy efficiency and climate change, with great participation success.Main resultsIn addition to being able to detect deficiencies in consumption and investment priorities, it has been possible to save 5% in electricity consumption in such buildings (136,344 kilowatts per hour), assuming a decrease in emissions of more than 56 tons of CO2 emitted from the atmosphere, and an annual saving of 20,000 euros.
