Murcia has stopped emitting 442,000 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere since it signed the Covenant of Mayors (29/09/2020)

| The municipality lowered greenhouse gas emissions by 20.6% thanks to its commitment to energy efficiency | In the municipality of Murcia, a total of 442,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) have ceased to be emitted into the atmosphere during the period since the City Council joined the Covenant of Mayors.

This has been announced by the Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, who this morning presented the main conclusions gathered in the latest update of the Emissions Inventory of the Murcian municipality.Specifically, greenhouse gas emissions fell 20.6% in Murcia.

In this regard, the mayor Navarro explained that "by adhering to the Covenant of Mayors, we promised to reduce emissions in the municipality by a fifth by 2020 and we have more than achieved that objective by reducing them by 20.6% until the year This only serves as an incentive to continue advancing on this path and to reach the goal of reducing our emissions by 40% by 2030 ".Per capita emissions drop 26%Per capita emissions, that is, the average CO2 emissions per person and year, have fallen in Murcia by 26% between 2007 and 2019, going from 5.06 tons per inhabitant to 3.75.

These data are fundamentally based on three pillars, such as the improvement of energy efficiency in the municipality, the use of renewable energy sources and a determined commitment to public awareness and training. All these lines of action are expressly reflected in the Sustainable Energy Action Plan, the application of which has made it possible to achieve the emission reduction targets in the areas of buildings and equipment, mobility and local generation of electricity. For example, the implementation of the actions and measures that are reflected in this document have made it possible for the production of photovoltaic solar energy in the regional capital to have grown by 286%, reaching 159,200 megawatt-hours, while it was at 557 megawatt-hours in 2007.Transport is the sector that produces the most emissionsIn 2019, the transport sector was the one that produced the most emissions, with 42% of the total.

Even so, 19% fewer polluting gases were emitted into the atmosphere than in 2007.

Regarding the consumption of fuels in the municipality during the past year, 67% was diesel, 26% gasoline and 4% biofuels.

Diesel consumption has dropped by 34% and biofuels has grown by 319% since 2007.In 2019, the residential sector caused 21% of the greenhouse gas emissions that occurred in Murcia.

Emissions in this sector have fallen by 22% since 2007.

Consumption in this area is associated 74% with electricity, 14% with natural gas, 9% with liquefied gases and 2.4% % to solar thermal energy.

The use of this product has increased 62%.34% decrease in the tertiary sectorFor its part, the tertiary sector generated 19% of total emissions.

The decrease in its impact since 2007 is 34%.

83% of its consumption has to do with electricity, 13% with natural gas and 1.8% with liquefied gases. In addition, municipal facilities are behind 2% of the emissions generated by the municipality.

This sector has reduced its volume of emissions by 39%, while the emissions caused by the public lighting network have also fallen by 35%.The final consumption of renewable energy in Murcia already represents 8% of the total, including photovoltaic solar energy, hydroelectric energy, solar thermal energy, biofuels and biogas.Natural gas consumption grows 66%The expansion of the natural gas network in recent years has led to greater access to this fuel in homes, which is less polluting than others, such as heating oil.

Natural gas consumption increased 66% over the past year.Similarly, the improvements made to the plants that are responsible for the treatment of waste, water and urban solid waste have allowed the modernization of the sector and the reduction of the emissions they generate by 33%.The Government Team's commitment to continue reducing pollutant emissions in the municipality of Murcia will focus within the short term on replacing the current mobility model with a more sustainable one in which a direct decrease in the consumption of known as fossil fuels.

Examples of this are oil, coal and liquefied petroleum gas.More electric mobility and pedestrianizationThe City Council will also promote the use of electric mobility and bicycles as a means of transport to move around the municipality while advancing the pedestrianization of the urban area.In the short term, the Government Team has also set the objective that the use of renewable energies for the production of heat and electricity represents 20% of the final energy consumption in the Murcian municipality.Likewise, a series of incentives will be designed to promote the reduction of emissions in the residential area through specific subsidy plans, specific aid and tax credits.
