The information campaign ´Murcia adds one´ returns to the La Flota neighborhood (26/09/2020)

| Surveys of neighbors will also be resumed soon to collect their views on the use of the brown container | The informative caravan and the bio-patrols return to the Flota neighborhood of Murcia to receive suggestions and inform residents about the 'Murcia adds one' campaign and the European circular economy project Valuewaste. The information caravan of this campaign is installed next to the health center, complying with all the sanitary measures against Covid 19, and the environmental agents will extend the action of the same again in the food markets, as well as in premises and catering establishments and hotels in the city of Murcia. In this way, the Murcia City Council and Ferrovial Servicios continue with this European project for the differentiated collection of organic matter.Currently, in the city of Murcia there are 37 containers, 29 of them located in the Fleet neighborhood, 7 in different food markets and one destined for restoration in the Plaza de San Pedro. The resumption of the awareness campaign aims to mobilize and remember again the citizens involved in this important environmental project with the aim of recovering the high participation rates, which they achieved during the last week of last June, where they were collected in said containers more than 1,000 kilos of organic waste. The summer period marked a notable decrease in the differentiated collection of organic waste and in the month of July and August the average collection was about 400 kilos per day, reaching 700 kilos per day in the last week of September. With the resumption of school activity, which marks a greater movement in the population, the resumption of the activity of the biopatrols in charge of listening, training and informing the agents involved in this project seeks to make them join the separation at origin again of organic waste to deposit it in the brown container.Last February, the first brown containers for organic waste were installed in the streets of the Murcian neighborhood of La Flota.Said containers, with a capacity for 2,200 liters and a brown lid, were distributed throughout the area, completing the selective collection system that has a yellow container for light plastic, metal and briks containers, a blue container for paper and cardboard, the green igloo for glass and mobile Ecopoints, for oils, light bulbs, fluorescent tubes, batteries, empty cans of varnish or paint, small electronic scrap, X-rays, clothes and toys, etc.

that every Thursday afternoon is located in the garden of the Three Cups in that neighborhood. This young, dynamic and active neighborhood, with high rates of participation in selective collection, was chosen to begin with the separation tests of the new brown container or fifth container, destined for organic waste, that is, fruit and vegetable waste, from cooked food, egg, shellfish and nut shells, coffee grounds and infusions or corks, matches and sawdust. The ValueWaste project promoted by the European Union chose the city of Murcia to pioneer a community program to convert urban organic waste into strategic economic resources. This project has 17 partners from 6 different nationalities, among which the Murcia City Council and the Kalundborg City Council (Denmark) stand out, municipalities in which the pilot tests are being carried out. Before the installation of these containers, the training and informative campaign 'Murcia Suma Uno' was launched through the media and social networks.More than 1,900 surveysUntil the end of July, 1,972 surveys have been carried out corresponding to the same number of homes in the Murcian neighborhood of the Fleet out of a total of 2,754 that comprise it.Now, with the new launch of the campaign, to be able to reach all of its residents. The data from the survey already carried out reflect the high degree of commitment of the residents who carried it out, who indicated that "it is a measure that the environment appreciates, it is a matter of social responsibility; it is easy to do and the future lies in the circular economy" .The councilor of this department, Rebeca Pérez, highlights that "the evolution is very positive since the waste collected is good because Murcians who use the brown container do it correctly and do not throw non-organic garbage"."Even so, we must continue working and reporting and that the participation data reaches 30% and to meet the objectives set by Europe in favor of the circular economy, we must reach 50%.

We will continue with this campaign, convinced that As the neighbors indicate in the survey, that the environment worries us and that it is in our hands to stop the climate change, with an action as simple as better classifying the waste that we produce every day, "explained Pérez. The collected waste that is a source of high-value raw materials, such as food proteins and other nutrients, are transferred to the Cañada Hermosa Treatment Center in whose facilities the process will take place to close the circle and recover the proteins and other nutrients that, suitably treated there they can become part of food for people and animals or agricultural fertilizers and nutrientsThe waste collected and transferred to Cañada Hermosa goes through the selection tromel, in the pilot plant, where it is characterized and analyzed, to know the product, which allows to measure the pulse upon collection and establish the best development pathways that allow improvements same. The material will only be transformed into compost during the time remaining until the start-up of the new facilities that continue the recovery project for this material, scheduled according to the schedule for the end of October. The next step is the anaerobic digestion process.

This will be carried out in a pilot plant for the rearing of black soldier flies, which produces dry larvae, transformed into flour with a high protein content, which will begin its operation next November. This project places Murcia at the forefront in the treatment of waste, allowing the technology applied there to efficiently use resources, turning waste into resources, putting the technology and research carried out in this center at the service of sustainability. It is funded by the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program and seeks solutions to problems such as bio-waste management.

At the same time, research is being carried out on alternative sources for human and animal nutrition. What goes and does not go to the brown containerOrganic waste is considered fruit and vegetable waste, cooked food waste, egg shells, shellfish and nuts, coffee grounds and infusions or corks, matches and sawdust.Sweeping remains, hair, cigarette butts, gum, cooking oil, diapers and personal hygiene products, pet litter, dust, etc.
