City Council and Board of Landowners sign an agreement that guarantees the conservation of the irrigation ditches in La Huerta (25/09/2020)

| José Ballesta: "We Murcia have one of the most powerful hydraulic engineering systems in the world: the network of ditches, which continues to water the Vega del Segura nine centuries later "| The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and the president of the Board of Landowners, Diego Frutos, signed this morning the agreement for the maintenance of the irrigation channels that run through the Huerta de Murcia, establishing a close framework of collaboration between the City Council and the irrigation community. The signing of this agreement is framed within the Huerta Action Plan, the municipal strategy that "highlights the most important legacy that Murcians have: the Huerta de Murcia, our most valuable historical, cultural and ecological legacy, which forms part of our collective identity as a people ”, highlighted José Ballesta during the event, which took place in the Sala de Corregidores. “The environment of the Segura river has remained inhabited throughout history, with the arrival of Iberians, Romans, Visigoths and Arabs.

The latter created one of the most prodigious hydraulic engineering systems that exist in the world: the network of ditches that continues to irrigate the Huerta de Murcia -which is the Huerta de Europa-, nine centuries later, ”said the mayor.“In Murcia, the intelligent management of water resources has about 1,000 years of history, thanks to this system of ditches and canalization elements that the Arabs built around the Segura Valley.

Our irrigation network is one of the oldest in Spain and a benchmark in water saving and efficiency ”, concluded the councilor.More than 75 channelsIn this way, the City Council assumes the expenses derived from the maintenance and cleaning works - mondas, remondas and clearing - of more than 75 irrigation channels that run through the municipal term, providing the Board of Landowners, which is the titular entity of the channels, from an item of 200,000 euros. It is an agreement that both institutions have been signing in recent years, the difference compared to previous periods is that on this occasion the number of channels on which cleaning work is carried out has been increased, as well as the amount allocated to the actions that their maintenance entails. The irrigation channels of La Aljufía, Alfatego de Benetucer, Brazal Puente del Moro, Churra La Nueva, Churra La Vieja, Albalate, Zaraiche, Barriomar, Santarén, Azarbe del Papel, Caravijola, Brazal Bajo de la Cueva, Azarbín de Monteagudo, Landrona de la Vaca, Almohajar, Benicomay, Escorredor Vereda de Chocolate, Alquibla del Noon in the Carril de los Sernas, Las Parras, Junco, Alguazas, Meana and Batán are some of the riverbeds framed within this project, which this year have been added the Acequia de Beniaján –on the arm of the Camino de San Pedro–, the Acequia de Alfande and the Acequia La Daba, among others. In this context, with the signing of the agreement, both institutions undertake to unite and coordinate the precise actions, aimed at making known the need for sustainable agriculture, both to society and to the irrigator, which allows defending the competitiveness of the activity agricultural.
