Work begins to recover the Roman column found in Monteagudo (17/09/2020)

| It was discovered in Calle Parra, after the episodes of heavy rains that occurred in September 2019 | The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Pedanías and Barrios, Marco Antonio Fernández, this morning supervised the work that is being carried out in Parra de Monteagudo street, which started this week and involves the recovery of the fragment of a Roman column, which will be transferred to the Interpretation Center of San Cayetano."The column, dated between the 1st and 2nd centuries, was found as a result of the episodes of heavy rains that occurred in Murcia just a year ago, in September 2019, leaving it uncovered," explained José Ballesta, who added that "this project , which will allow us to recover this valuable archaeological piece of our heritage, is part of the project 'Las Fortalezas del Rey Lobo', the first archaeological park that will recover the medieval roots of Murcia ”.The works for the recovery of the column have started this week and will end depending on the archaeological advances that are being developed.

Specifically, the City Council has allocated 13,288.95 euros to this action.José Ballesta highlighted that “Monteagudo is one of those key places to understand how Murcians were in the past and who we are today.

This heritage complex, which dominates the entire Huerta de Murcia, is not only a cultural and landscape emblem of our municipality, it is a focus of unique historical and heritage wealth in the Spanish Mediterranean ”.After the detachment of a wall in Parra streetDue to the episodes of heavy rains, part of a retaining wall fell off in Calle Parra de Monteagudo, resulting in the dragging of land that it contained, exposing part of the ancient Roman column.

Specifically, the Roman column was discovered by chance by residents of the area in February. The excavation is being carried out following an archaeological methodology, taking the pertinent safety measures to avoid landslides - the fragment of the column is embedded in a slope of land, which is why it is necessary to excavate the lands that are located above-.Later, you will be transferred to the San Cayetano Interpretation Center, located in Monteagudo.

Likewise, after the extraction, different works will be carried out on the retaining wall and on the street that runs above the place where the column was located, guaranteeing the safety of the environment and avoiding possible falls.Medieval MurciaThis action is also part of the municipal strategy 'Medieval Murcia', "whose objective is to recover the history of our past, so present in our heritage," said the Murcian councilor, who pointed out that "Medieval Murcia is a comprehensive transformation project in the short, medium and long term, a City Project that recovers the identity of Murcia and its roots, offering a new model of cultural and historical tourism, making the history of Murcia known to Murcians and visitors ”.The 'Las Fortalezas del Rey Lobo' project, the expansion of the Santa Eulalia Wall Visitor Center or the recovery of the footprint of the Arab wall are other major initiatives that make up the Medieval Murcia strategy.
