Promotion executes more than 45 actions to improve accessibility in different parts of Murcia (13/09/2020)

| The works have consisted of the adaptation of more than thirty pedestrian crossings, extensions of sidewalks in various squares and streets and improvements in access to various parking for people with disabilities | Eliminating the barriers that limit the autonomy and well-being of people in the municipality of Murcia is one of the key objectives pursued by the Department of the Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation, which together with the Department of Development, are developing a series of actions to improve accessibility in the municipality of Murcia.At the moment, from the Department headed by the mayor Mario Gómez, more than 45 actions have been undertaken on public roads: streets, squares and avenues of Murcia.

These actions, corresponding to the Development area, are part of area three of the I Municipal Accessibility Plan, whose main objective is to move towards a more accessible municipality for all people; and that these projects are adopted to the current regulations regarding universal accessibility. Specifically, more than thirty pedestrian crossings have been adapted in various neighborhoods and areas of the city, scuppers with a grid opening larger than allowed have been replaced, and poorly located street furniture that hindered the passage has been removed.Likewise, the work project for the modification of 108 fords has been executed, adapting them to current regulations: in the North district (34), Santa María de Gracia (38), La Flota (14) and the Infante Juan Manuel (22) .An extension of sidewalks has also been carried out in C / Manuel de Falla, Plaza Pintor Pedro Flores, Plaza San Julián and C / Agustinas, among others, in addition to the execution of improvements in the accesses to various parking lots for people with disabilities .Works in the Plaza de San AgustínAs for the Plaza de San Agustín, the technicians of the Department of Development have placed directional paving from the pedestrian crossing, located in front of the ONCE door, to the bus stop, so that the blind can orient themselves and get to the stop, in addition to the new button pavement across the front of the stop warning of the danger at the end of the sidewalk and the beginning of the road.Likewise, button slab has been installed in 7 pedestrian crossings around the square.

Currently, work is being done on the placement of both directional and tactile paving at the intersection of C / Sagasta with C / Pilar, where two pedestrian crossings located at said crossing have also been adapted to the regulations.Technical commission"These works are part of another set of actions that we are going to implement, in a transversal way, together with the rest of the councils and contributions from the Municipal Boards, through a technical commission that will be in charge of coordinating all municipal measures in terms of accessibility ", highlighted the councilor Mario Gómez.For her part, the person in charge of Disability, Paqui Pérez, has stressed the need to continue working in this regard together with the councils and the Municipal Boards, the closest to the citizens.

"The technical commission will be in charge of articulating a coordinated work adjusted to the demands and needs of each neighborhood and district".In this way, the mayor Paqui Pérez has recalled that the Council has requested information from the municipal services and the different councils about the proposals that affect their areas and that are reflected in the I Accessibility Plan of the Murcia City Council, " with the aim of coordinating actions and addressing universal accessibility from a transversal point of view during the mandate ".Budget itemsFinally, the person in charge of Development has underlined the need for "future budget projects to contain specific items for the execution of accessibility actions throughout the municipality; and in strategic areas such as traffic and transport, spaces for public use, citizen communication and information, culture, leisure and accessible tourism, sports and health, education, training and employment, social services and protection in emergency situations ".
