Murcia celebrates the ´Car Free Day´ with free urban public transport (09/09/2020)

| Mayor José Ballesta presents the five axes on which the new Mobility Project is articulated: Collective transport, personal mobility, dissuasive parking, new pedestrian zones and low emissions and traffic calming | Murcia once again joins the celebration of the European Mobility Week to publicize the new model in which the City Council works, betting on individual mobility and collective transport. In addition to being able to participate in about a hundred activities for ten days, from September 16 to 26, Murcians will be able to use public transport for free -tram and urban buses- on September 22 'Day without cars', a day in which the Gran Vía will be closed to traffic. This morning Mayor José Ballesta presented the main mobility challenges in the municipality, accompanied by Ramón Madrid, dean of the College of Economists; Roberto Liñán, professor of Mobility at UCAM and the councilors of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez; of Urban Development and Modernization, José Guillén; of Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro, and of Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé.The new Mobility Project of the municipality is articulated in five axes: Collective transport, with a new transport model that will be put out to tender at the beginning of the year; Personal mobility, with the development of pilot projects for electric bikes and scooters that will be ready by the end of 2020; Dissuasive car parks, which Murcians will be able to debut in early 2021; New pedestrian areas, such as San Nicolás, at the end of the year and Santa Eulalia, a project that is already being worked on; and zones with low emissions and traffic calming, with delimited and delimited areas of restricted access for the mitigation of emissions, which will be established by the end of 2020."In this way we guarantee the mobility needs of each and every one of the citizens while preserving territorial and social equity, and we contribute to the improvement of environmental factors, from an urban perspective, and to the health of citizens by reducing emissions of effects of greenhouse gases and promoting sustainable and healthy mobility habits ”, pointed out the Mayor.Ballesta has continued explaining that "we are moving towards a situation of sustainable mobility, addressing a set of action proposals aimed at promoting intermodality towards forms of transport with lower energy consumption and a decrease in the use of private vehicles".About a hundred activitiesThe European Mobility Week is celebrated from September 16 to 22, but in Murcia it will run until the 26th in order to include the Movielectric Fair. The activities, about a hundred, will begin next Wednesday with the campaign 'Thank you for using public transport' and the distribution of more than 3,500 potted plants.

This activity will take place in different streets and squares of the municipality and aims to encourage Murcian to opt for collective transport that is totally safe and allows the reduction of emissions.Another of the outstanding initiatives is 'Paseorama' which, thanks to new technologies, will allow attendees to test the benefits of cycling and 'travel' with this means of transport to different enclaves of the municipality. The districts will also be the protagonists of this Mobility Week thanks to the Mobility Tour that will arrive in Cabezo de Torres, El Palmar, Puente Tocinos, La Alberca and Sangonera la Verde.

In all of them, the different actions in the field of transport that the City Council is developing will be announced and new bike benches will be installed.Murcians will also be able to participate in botanical tourism routes that will be held every day and that seek to demonstrate that individual mobility is one of the best options for getting around the municipality: 'Walk through the trees of Murcia: anecdotes, curiosities and legends' and 'The plants of the garden of Murcia in view of a bicycle'.The program also includes conferences, talks and exhibition of technical work by experts from universities such as the UMU, UPCT and UCAM and the Professional Association of Economists, which will allow to know in detail the news of the new Mobility Project of the municipality as the Zones Strategy of Low Emissions, the new bike lanes, electric mobility or the commitment to mobility in the 2030 agenda, among others. The 'Mobility 7 cities' conference should be highlighted, which will bring together representatives of the seven most important municipalities in Spain to jointly analyze the mobility initiatives that are being developed and that are aimed at reducing polluting emissions. The presentations will be broadcast on the municipal website so that they can be followed in an accessible and safe way.The most important day of this European Mobility Week will be Car-Free Day, which will take place on Tuesday 22 September and in which urban public transport will be free.

Gran Vía will be closed to road traffic, except for public transport. The previous Sunday, September 20, the Gran Vía will be closed to traffic and will become a landscaped space for mobility in which different activities will be developed such as bicycle workshops, children's entertainment and road safety circuit, and where they can be tested bicycles and electric scooters.Maximum securityAll these activities will be carried out under the strictest security and protection conditions, with limited capacity, safety distance, exhaustive cleaning and mandatory use of masks.New Mobility ProjectThe new Mobility Project of the municipality seeks to reduce polluting emissions into the atmosphere, sustainable logistics within the city, maintain sustainable development and facilitate mobility for citizens, by shaping the offer to the true needs of Murcians. The different actions in terms of mobility seek to improve the collective health status of Murcians and sustainability, maintaining environmental quality levels. What is intended, in this way, is the promotion of sustainable urban mobility with clean urban transport, better collective transport, urban-rural connection, optimization of the road network, cycling, pedestrian and electric mobility transport and development of systems of clean energy supply. This Mobility Project is aligned with the municipal Climate Change Mitigation Strategy that involves all municipal services and that includes a battery of actions that have already been implemented under the name 'Clean Air'.

In this way, the City Council sets itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by one million tons by 2030.XX edition of the European Mobility WeekThe European Mobility Week is a campaign aimed at raising awareness, both among politicians and citizens, about the negative consequences of irrational use of the car in the city, both for public health and the environment, and the benefits of using more sustainable modes of transport such as public transport, cycling and walking. This initiative arose in Europe in 1999 and from the year 2000 it had the support of the European Commission.

It is held every year, from September 16 to 22, although this year in Murcia it runs until September 26, carrying out activities to promote sustainable mobility and encouraging the development of good practices and permanent measures.
