Statement from the Vistabella Neighborhood Association in relation to the state of abandonment of the Fica (07/09/2020)

| And with the decision of the Murcia City Council to locate a weekly market there on Sundays | The Vistabella Neighbors Association shows its concern at the news published in the local press on September 1 that the Murcia City Council has decided to locate a market with more than one hundred stalls on Sundays in La Fica. From the Association we want to record, first of all, our solidarity with the vendors in the markets of our municipality and our support for the weekly market that takes place every Thursday on the Avenue of Fame. However, as residents of the area we are well aware of the pressure the neighborhood is subjected to that day and the problems that are generated, which unfortunately the City Council has been unable to solve so far, despite the repeated demands of this Association: dirt and garbage that ends up in the streets of the neighborhood and in many cases reaches the river; invasion of cars, chaos in traffic and serious parking problems and fines for the inhabitants of the area.Added to this are the crowds of people that we have continued to see in the last editions of the market, despite finding ourselves in a situation of serious outbreaks of the pandemic. For all these reasons, the news of the establishment of a new market in the Fica area generates many doubts and uncertainties and we have asked the Murcia City Council to clarify what calendar it handles for the establishment of this new market, what cleaning measures and waste removal are planned to be taken, how will it be the management of traffic and parking flows and how will health security be guaranteed in the area.It must also be borne in mind that currently this environment is an area for walking, sports and cycling for many Murcians who seek rest, tranquility and a minimum contact with nature on Sundays. How will this activity be reconciled with the market location and the hectic traffic and noise it will generate? In addition, this Neighborhood Association wishes to remind the City Council that for years the surroundings of the Auditorium and La Fica have been in a lamentable state of neglect and ugliness, full of dirt, rubble, neglected orchards and unsafe environments. The current reality is that it is a large space abandoned to its fate in an area of ??the city that lacks large parks and sports and leisure facilities for its neighbors and for all Murcians. And this is especially shameful in an area bordering the river that should be especially cared for as it is the natural transition between the Segura and its garden and the city. Not forgetting either that one of the most important congress and cultural activity centers of the city is located here, the Víctor Villegas Auditorium, which is a pole of attraction for visitors and tourists to whom the City Council should offer a good image of the city.

city ??and a green, clean and safe environment. From the Neighborhood Association we reiterate our already historic claim that this area be transformed into a great green lung for recreation of the city and we bet that any intervention that is made in it is with the aim of renaturalizing the river and its surroundings and of generate spaces in which the city opens up to nature.Likewise, we demand that the activities projected in the area be environmentally sustainable and respectful of rest and daily life of the inhabitants of the surrounding neighborhoods. We are concerned that Fica will become a "mixed bag" to which all kinds of activities and "events" will end up, not always appropriate to the environment, and for which the opinion and needs of the public have not been counted on.

inhabitants of the area.In order to convey our proposals and demands, last June we asked the Mayor's Office for a meeting so that the City Council would inform us about its action plans for this area and to request that cleanliness, safety, care and maintenance be guaranteed.

of these spaces.

So far we have not received a response. For the sake of transparency and respect for citizen participation and the neighborhood movements that should govern the municipal corporation, we have once again asked the City Council for a meeting with the municipal officials who are responsible.
