El Mayayo becomes the center of agroecological innovation (07/09/2020)

The Agroecological Innovation Observatory against Climate Change and the Agroecology and Eco-development Network of the Region of Murcia have also participated.This conference took place today in the municipal nursery of Mayayo, a property of the Murcia City Council, located in Sangonera La Verde, where various activities of socio-labor integration and agroecological innovation are carried out, with people at risk of social exclusion coordinated by CEOM and Parenthesis.The activities that have been developed have been the Biodiversity Fair, in which local varieties have been selected, a seed exchange has been carried out and a sponsorship of fruit trees has been carried out.There has also been a workshop on the design and planting of an orchard, grafting of citrus and peach trees, extraction of seeds and cooking with quinoa and amaranth."The objective of the City Council in this project that is being carried out in Mayayo, in collaboration with the University of Murcia and various associations and social groups, is to combine integration and training while promoting social values.

Through the agreements with CEOM, many young people with intellectual disabilities work and learn.

In total, 60 people have been trained under these guidelines.An example of the work carried out is the planting of seasonal flowers that decorate the streets and squares of the municipality of Murcia, flowers that have been produced with the help of CEOM staff, who were taking a course on 'Auxiliary activities in nurseries, gardens and level 1 garden centers for their training and integration into the labor market. "These young people are part of a project where they develop social integration and teamwork, in addition to training.

These jobs allow them to have real contact with the world of work, learn a trade, in addition to supplying significant satisfaction with a good job done on a personal and professional level ", added José Guillén.The nursery as a key plant production center for public use El Mayayo has 5,000 m2.

These units have a 2,200 m2 greenhouse, equipped with climate control and fully autonomous localized irrigation, three 1,150 m2 tunnel greenhouses and an outdoor area where the most rustic plants are grown, equipped with an anti-weed mesh and autonomous localized irrigation system with built-in fertilization. The City Council has also carried out different improvements in the Mayayo facilities, such as, for example, the repair of several greenhouses, placement of protective plastic structures, two new irrigation booths, leveling the ground of different greenhouses, placement of mesh anti-herb, installation of modern irrigation systems, as well as several other projects that are underway, in order to turn this municipal space into a key center in the production of plants for public use, as well as a place for training and social and labor integration.
