Murcia joins a European project for the management of organic waste and waste from construction (26/08/2020)

| CityLoops has 28 partners between companies and local entities | Murcia is already part of the European CityLoops project, which seeks to promote the correct management of organic waste, such as food waste from restoration and housing, as well as those generated in the construction sector, such as concrete blocks, bricks and containers, among others. This initiative, funded by the European Commission through HORIZON 2020, has 28 partners, among which are pioneering companies and local entities in the circular economy and has a global budget of 10.5 million euros. Thus, Murcia will receive training and advice from 7 European cities with an established circular policy, as well as from main non-profit organizations, such as ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability) and private sector companies.A second life for wasteThe project will consist of a series of demonstration actions to reuse two of the main waste streams in cities: on the one hand, construction and demolition waste, "since they constitute the most important fraction of urban waste, with 32 % of the total generated.

Europe consumes between 1.2 and 1.8 trillion tons of these materials per year and this project will allow us to give this waste a second use, "said the councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, Mercedes Bernabé.130 million tons per yearOn the other hand, in relation to organic waste, approximately 130 million tons per year of this type of waste are generated per year, with great potential for use in the field or as an energy vector. With this project, a total of 30 new procedures will be tested during the four-year duration of the plan, which has three phases:Study phase: in which the project is currently located, where the urban metabolism of the municipality is studied.Previous analysis phase and search for agents interested in the project: analysis of the most appropriate solution, which will allow finding the most appropriate solutions.Proper implementation of the solution.More efficient methodsAmong the different actions to be carried out are more efficient demolition methods to take advantage of materials used for construction, public awareness campaigns, decision-making tools in reference to the circularity of the municipality, 3D impact simulation tools, as well as drafting of a guide for acquiring circular products and services. An important aspect of the project is that effective methods of acquisition of goods and services by local governments will be studied, creating innovative and circular local markets, improving the reuse of our resources.Bernabé pointed out that "Murcia is currently one of the municipalities that carries out the most actions related to the circular economy in Europe, since in addition to CityLoops, we participate in other projects in this area, such as VALUEWASTE, HOOP, ENRICH or CONQUER".
