The Consistory will rehabilitate the roofs and facades of the Ermita del Pilar, a 17th century emblem of the San Antolín neighborhood (24/08/2020)

| José Ballesta: "The Ermita del Pilar, which has a great cultural component, since the old Wall runs through it, will become a place of reference for culture "| The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Culture and Heritage Recovery, Jesús Pacheco, presented this morning the project to rehabilitate the Ermita del Pilar, located in the Murcian neighborhood of San Antolín –between the streets of Pilar and Julián Calvo–, with which the facades and roofs of this emblem of the city will be recovered, whose origin dates back to the end of the 17th century."The Ermita del Pilar, a living history of Murcia, has a great cultural component, since part of the old Murcia Wall runs through it, a defensive section classified as BIC", highlighted José Ballesta, who announced that "the Hermitage, which keeps more with 300 years of history, it will become a reference point for the dissemination of sacred art, since when the rehabilitation works are finished it will open for Murcians with exhibitions and exhibitions about sacred culture ”.Through this project, the water leaks on the roofs and facades will be eliminated.

In addition, the works will make it possible to define the sections of the Wall, as well as the historical restorations that have been carried out there and its possible hidden remains.A multidisciplinary cultural spaceOnce the facades and roofs have been rehabilitated, the City Council will open the Hermitage to all Murcians, becoming a new reference center for culture - the building is currently closed to the public and is exclusively open for worship.

Photography, music, sculpture and sacred art are some of the disciplines that will be shown in the Hermitage and that will be combined with these cults. The implementation of this project is one of the objectives set by the City Council a year ago -since June 2019-, with the aim of recovering spaces for the enjoyment of Murcians and visitors, as well as to continue to value the layout of the Medieval Wall.388 m2 divided into two facades: the main and the sideThe City Council will allocate an injection of 155,490.54 euros to the rehabilitation of the facades and roofs of the Hermitage, a project drawn up by municipal technicians that has already been approved by the General Directorate of Cultural Property, and is currently in the process of hiring. The Hermitage has two facades: the main one, which faces Calle del Pilar and has a surface area of ??124.08 square meters, and the side, which faces Juan Cavo Street and has 264.02 square meters, adding up to a total of 388.10 square meters.

The two-story building has a constructed area of ??373.80 square meters.Among other actions, the works will involve the cleaning and restoration of the shields of the main façade, as well as the replacement of the ornamental spheres of the bell tower that have been detached by others made of natural stone.Analysis of existing documentation and historical criteriaThe restoration works of the building will be carried out according to historical criteria and analyzing the existing historical documentation, respecting the original conception of the building, as well as its original elements and the remains of the old Wall. The corregidor Pueyo ordered the construction of the Hermitage after being unharmed by a gunshot thanks to a reliquary of the Virgen del PilarThe existing documentation on the origin of the Ermita del Pilar dates its construction from the year 1681, apparently inaugurating on December 27, 1684.

The work was carried out next to the old Glass Door –between the old Wall and the ante-wall -, which was then the access to the city from the medieval suburb of San Antolín.The Hermitage was run by the magistrate Francisco Miguel de Pueyo - born in Aragon, he arrived in Murcia in 1679 -.

After being the object of a treacherous shot, which was unharmed thanks to the fact that the projectile was embedded in a reliquary of the Virgen del Pilar that he wore around his neck, the magistrate Pueyo decided to raise the chapel, as a token of gratitude to the Virgin del Pilar.

With the passage of time, the Puerta de Vidrieros was reduced to the Arco del Pilar - demolished in 1863 -, forcing the current façade of the Hermitage to be erected, which overlooks Calle del Pilar.
