Free household goods collection service (23/08/2020)

| The free household goods collection service has removed 3,671 tons of bulky waste from public roads in the first half of the year | Anyone who wishes, can request the removal of furniture for free either by telephone, by contacting the telephone number 900 511 133, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, through the Murcia Sustainable City website or using the associated social networks To this page. The free household goods collection service has removed a total of 3,671 tons of bulky waste from public roads from January to July 2020.

This figure represents an increase of approximately 5% compared to the same period last year, which was 3,465 tons. “The figures confirm that the service has been increasing in recent years and that is very positive.

Even so, it is important to continue working on public awareness to avoid the abandonment of these elements, which affects the image of the environment and the safety of the public thoroughfare ”, explains Rebeca Pérez, Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth.Based on data from previous years, 1,998 tons of furniture and bulky items were collected in 2014; in 2015 they were 2,500; in 2016, 3,320 were reached; 2017 a total of 4,630 were added; in 2018 it was 5,991; In 2019, 6,840 tons of this type of waste were collected. Greater awarenessThe number of calls received also confirms a greater awareness of the abandonment of belongings on public roads.

Last year 2019, 39,689 incidents related to the collection of bulky waste were recorded, of which 10,322 were calls from citizens aware of the correct use and 29,367 were made by the service operators. With respect to the current period, from January to July 31, 2020, a total of 21,144 incidents have been generated, of which 7,690 were calls from citizens.

However, in the same time frame, in 2019 23,723 incidents were generated, of which 5,656 were from residents of the municipality. “The data is still positive, despite the inactivity of the service during the alarm state.

However, the number of calls received after confinement is remarkable, especially as of July, ”explains Rebeca Pérez. Important to notify of incidentsThe company's workers are in charge of notifying through a tool on the mobile device of those abandoned belongings and large objects before the citizens do so, which improves and speeds up the collection of those people who do not communicate the deposit . “The correct thing is for the citizen himself to do it, since he is responsible for buying and discarding correctly what he no longer uses.

The collection is planned, on the day and at the time, and the routes are more effective and efficient.

When the operators generate the incident, it may be that these take several days or the incident does not enter the planning.

Another drawback is space, since vehicles are limited and, at times, it is very difficult to collect everything in their path ”, explains Rebeca Pérez.Awareness campaignThe Murcia City Council, together with Ferrovial Servicios, launched an awareness campaign on June 22 to prevent the uncontrolled deposit of household goods, furniture and bulky items on public roads in the districts. The initiative recalls that it is forbidden to leave this waste on public roads and that the penalty that this act entails, according to the Municipal Road Cleaning Ordinance, ranges between 151 and 6,000 euros. "In addition to causing a bad image, these actions lead to irregularities in the order established in the collection and the presence of uncontrolled landfills both on the streets and on the sites," recalls the mayor. Since this campaign was launched, the Civic Brigades have detected 843 points with discharges of household goods that, added to the 864 that have been notified by the Murcian add up to 1,707.

The Local Police have started three disciplinary proceedings in these two weeks. Operation of the serviceAnyone who wishes, can request the removal of furniture free of charge by telephone, by contacting the telephone number 900 511 133, 24 hours a day, every day of the year, through the Murcia Sustainable City website or using the social networks associated with this page. Once contacted, the direction from where they are going to detach from the bulky furniture is indicated.

The furniture and belongings will then be deposited in the container closest to the indicated address, between 9:00 pm and 11:00 pm, so that it does not impede the passage of pedestrians and without supporting them on the container. The collection does not include in this service debris, remains of works or large appliances that are deposited in the Ecoparque de Murcia.

This service has a daily frequency in the city center and alternate in neighborhoods and districts, carrying out this work from Monday to Saturday. First of all, the removal of bulky items is taken care of after a telephone call, although a combing of the corresponding areas assigned each day is carried out at the container points.

Each user can present 2 pieces of furniture or 8 kilos. The service is aimed at the residents individually, who are responsible for the waste deposited in the street until it is collected.

Items that pose a risk of injury to public road users, such as large appliances, mirrors, glass, sharp objects, cannot be abandoned. Large producers, carpentry companies, furniture stores, removals, upholstery or urban development maintenance managers must manage their own waste by discarding it according to their marked legal criteria. If the user cannot wait for the assigned pick-up day, he has the Murcia Ecopark to take him on the day and time that best suits his needs. These voluminous collected are transferred to the waste treatment plant located in the Murcian district of Cañada Hermosa for later recycling and recovery.
