Recycle, the solidarity initiative of the City Council that gives bicycles a second life and encourages clean mobility (20/08/2020)

| This pioneering project consists of recovering disused bicycles, donated by individuals, which will be tuned in the workshop of the Municipal Office de la Bicicleta and, later, donated to third sector entities | The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, presented this morning 'Recycle', the project promoted by the City Council that consists of recovering disused bicycles, donated by individuals to the Municipal Office of the Bicycle, which will be fine-tuned in the workshop to later deliver them to third sector entities, associations or foundations.“This initiative responds to two strategic lines that guide the actions of the Murcia City Council: on the one hand, Sustainable Mobility, through programs that prioritize travel by bicycle, promoting clean mobility in our municipality; and, on the other hand, the Circular Economy, giving a second life to bicycles ”, highlighted José Ballesta, who added that“ Recycle is a project that will continue to grow thanks to the solidarity of Murcian people ”.The event was held at the Municipal Bicycle Office, where the first 15 bicycles recovered through this initiative were delivered, destined for the Murcia and Comarcas Mental Health Association (AFES).

Individuals interested in participating in the 'Recycle' project should contact the Municipal Bicycle Office, by phone 968 20 02 93.A commitment to sustainable means of transportOld or disused bikes can work like new with a good set-up to get them rolling.

It is a gesture that has a double function, since in addition to giving a second useful life to this vehicle, it promotes its use, encouraging people to leave the car parked and betting on sustainable means of transport. In addition, this project is an action aligned with the municipal strategy of Circular Economy, since bicycles are given a second life, which pass from their first individuals to the hands of users of third sector entities, associations or foundations.Donated bicycles are registered with the Municipal Bicycle Office - they have a national 'bi-registration' system - so in the event of theft or theft, the entity to which they are transferred can contact said office to manage its recovery.600 bicycles and 117 km of tracksThe municipality of Murcia has 117 kilometers of cycle paths, 600 rental bicycles, 60 bicycle loan stations and 3,156 hairpin parking spaces, which have been implemented through the City Council's Mobility Plan, whose objective is to prioritize travel on foot, by bicycle or by public transport, promoting sustainable and clean mobility.Collaboration with the Murcia Mental Health AssociationCurrently, the City Council and the Murcia and Comarcas Mental Health Association (AFES) maintain a collaboration agreement to develop the 'Social Educator for the mentally ill' program.

Likewise, this association has a Day Center, with about 95 places, which was built on a plot that the City Council gave, located in Santiago and Zaraiche. The entity, chaired by María Teresa Martínez, who attended the event this morning, together with the director of AFES, Maite Gálvez, was created in 1980 and this year its 40th anniversary is celebrated.
