Traffic develops a special plan to guarantee reliability and avoid deterioration of traffic light installations (11/08/2020)

| During the month of August, cleaning and repainting work is being carried out in San Antón, Ronda Norte and Gran Vía | The Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, through the Traffic Service, is developing this August a preventive maintenance plan for traffic light regulations with the aim of providing their service in an efficient, agile and safe way.The city of Murcia has 520 traffic light intersections with which a large network is created that covers both neighborhoods and districts.

Of them, "40% are sensorized and centralized with the traffic control room, allowing these intersections to be regulated to achieve more sustainable mobility depending on many factors, such as traffic at all times, levels of environmental pollution, accidents traffic and events in the city, among others ”, highlights the mayor.Maintenance actions focus on repainting, when needed, and cleaning each part of the installation: head, optical units, visor, brackets and cabinets, thus guaranteeing their reliability and avoiding their deterioration. It is also contemplated the replacement of the old incandescent lamps from the network by LED technology for light signaling, "since they have an estimated life 50 times higher, and therefore generate significant energy and maintenance savings, satisfying the objective of achieving greater efficiency and road safety ”.“Cleaning tasks are carried out in traffic light facilities with special care to protect them and prevent their deterioration, also repainting the horizontal signs, both in neighborhoods and districts, with the aim of improving their perception and therefore the safety of all road users ”.These maintenance work on the traffic light facilities will take place this August in San Antón, Ronda Norte and Gran Vía, as these are areas with a high concentration of traffic lights. In addition to this preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance is carried out throughout the year, immediately repairing any damage or breakdown suffered by any element and its installation and replacing any necessary element thereof. These actions cannot be scheduled, but act on demand immediately.

Said demand comes from different channels: alarms inherent to the control system, notices from the service's own personnel, daily notices from the Local Police, Municipal and District Boards, neighbors and individuals in general, who notify the different incidents to the telephone number of the 24-hour breakdown service provided in the contract. The number of actions in traffic lights managed in the first seven months of this year amounts to 3,355, of which 70% are breakdowns (traffic lights off, burned out lamps, bells that do not sound ...) and 30% to other incidents (graffiti, posters, collisions ...)Traffic management throughout the municipalityTraffic management in the city of Murcia is coordinated and directed by the Traffic Service, dependent on the Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, which includes the conservation and maintenance of a total of 498 traffic light crossings (210 centralized and 288 non-centralized ), 10 systems of variable message panels for traffic information, 4 access control units, 2 underpass control units, comprising 10 cameras, 59 television camera units and 2 communications nodes controlled from the Traffic room and operators with the SDCTD control program and its subprograms. The Murtrafic company is in charge of this essential service for mobility and road safety in the municipality of Murcia, which includes the comprehensive management of the traffic control system.
