The City Council and Unimar deal in a course with the sustainable management of the Murcia vegetable garden (05/08/2020)

This is one of the training actions that the Murcian Consistory will offer within the 37th edition of the summer activities of the International University of the Sea with the aim of encouraging the consumption of local products and promoting purchases in local commerceThe Murcia City Council, thanks to the management carried out by the Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government, led by the mayor Mercedes Bernabé, offers five training actions within the summer courses and activities of the 37th edition of the Universidad Internacional del Mar ( Unimar), which will take place between September and October.'Sustainable management of the vegetable garden of Murcia' is one of the titles that complete the training offer, which will be held from September 8 to 11 at the Faculty of Biology, on the Espinardo Campus of the University of Murcia.

Those interested have until September 1 to register, which can be done electronically on the Unimar website.Sustainable recovery process of the gardenThe mayor Mercedes Bernabé has detailed that "in the municipality of Murcia we live immersed in a process of sustainable recovery of the garden.

With this training activity we want to create a discussion forum that allows us to raise awareness and sensitize about the importance of the garden in development sustainable of our city.

In fact, we must highlight the need to recover the consumption of local products, as well as promoting purchases in local commerce, which is deeply rooted in the neighborhoods and districts of Murcia, and is one of the sectors that have been more affected by the economic consequences derived from the pandemic caused by the expansion of Covid-19 ".Mercedes Bernabé has met with the director of this course, José María Egea, to discuss the latest preparations.

Egea is Professor of Botany at the University of Murcia.

This program will try to contribute to the conservation of the periurban agrarian space, to the food sustainability of the urban system and to the socioeconomic development of the Murcia metropolitan area through initiatives that promote food production under agro-ecological and local principles.

Aimed at students, technicians, teachers and researchersThe course is intended for students of biology, environmental sciences, agronomy and geography, technicians, teachers, researchers or anyone else interested in the conservation and revaluation of the orchard in Murcia, as well as in the production and marketing of agroecological food. This training will take place over four sessions, one per day, in which the situation of the Murcian orchard, its aromatic and medicinal plants will be addressed, organic, green and biofertilizer fertilizers will be treated, the adaptation of crops will be analyzed to climate change, as well as workshops on crop transplantation or pest control.Five courses on various topicsThe City Council actively participates in the 37th edition of Unimar with the launch of a total of five courses, which are as follows: 'Sustainable management of the vegetable garden of Murcia', 'II Edition Political communication and campaign strategies', 'Urban Agendas: a new way of understanding local governance', 'Leisure and Disability: a path towards inclusion.

Cognitive accessibility: understandable spaces '(online), and' The City in Al-Andalus; perspectives from practice '(online)'.This training offer is the result of collaboration agreements between the City Council and the Universidad Internacional del Mar, whose contents will analyze current issues focused on the social, political and cultural sphere. "This type of activities, within the scope of university extension, allow us to debate current issues, offering different opinions from respect and diversity," concludes Mercedes Bernabé.40 courses on different subjects and professional fieldsThe Universidad Internacional del Mar, Unimar, which organizes the summer courses at the University of Murcia, offers this year a total of 40 summer courses on different subjects and professional fields.

This year, due to the Covid-19, the classroom activity has been delayed until September and some of the courses have changed to online mode. The Unimar courses will be held in a total of twelve locations, thanks to the collaboration of the different municipalities of the Region, among which is the Murcian City Council.
