The University of Murcia receives funding for five research projects on COVID19 (03/08/2020)

| Through the Ministry of Employment, Research and Universities | The Seneca Foundation has created a support line of 700,000 euros for the development of nine research projects related to COVID.19 The program is called 'COV I + D-19' and aims to place research as one of the priorities of the fight against the pandemic in the Region of Murcia, not only from the health point of view, but also to minimize the social and economic impact of the virus. The projects have been selected for their interest, scientific quality and opportunity, and have been positively evaluated by the Evaluation Committee of the Carlos III Health Institute. The two UMU initiatives that receive funding are the 'Effects of age on virus susceptibility', led by Professor Victoriano Mulero, director of the research group "Immunity, Inflammation and Cancer" of the Faculty of Biology and that of 'Prediction of prognosis in patients of Covid-19 based on artificial intelligence' led by Professor Juan Antonio Botía, researcher of the research group "Intelligent Systems and Telematics" of the Faculty of Informatics. The University of Murcia participates in three other projects through the Murcian Institute for Biosanitary Research (IMIB), where the university and the SMS concentrate their biomedical potential so that basic science has a translational application to patients in the Region of Murcia.

These projects are: 'Transfusion safety in the COVID-19 pandemic', led by Professor Vicente Vicente García, head of the Hematology and Clinical-Experimental Medical Oncology group and Professor at the Department of Internal Medicine at UMU; 'Simulation and analysis of data from the Covid-19 outbreak using advanced statistical techniques and artificial intelligence' led by Professor Rubén López from the Nutrition and Food Science group and professor at the Food Technology Department,Nutrition and Food Science from the Veterinary School.

The third of the projects is the so-called 'Observatory of the evolution of aerositivity to SARS-CoV-2 in a population of low initial incidence' led by Professor Luis García Marcos, head of the group of Pediatrics and Professor of the Department of Surgery, Pediatrics , Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-Rector for Health Sciences at the University of Murcia.Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-Rector for Health Sciences at the University of Murcia.Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Faculty of Medicine and Vice-Rector for Health Sciences at the University of Murcia. Among the lines of work of the projects are artificial intelligence applied to predicting the prognosis of patients, simulation and analysis of outbreak data, safety of transfusions, the study of the effect of age on susceptibility to the virus.

or the study of the evolution of seropositivity to the disease in a population of low initial incidence, as is the case of the Region of Murcia. This initiative represents a consolidation of the research potential of the University of Murcia and, by extension, our Region, in order to solve the great health, economic and social challenges derived from the coronavirus pandemic.

The funds from this call, together with other national and international financing channels, will help concrete results to be obtained from the public university with a direct impact on society.
