Contributions to the Green Infrastructure Strategy will focus Murcia's fifth participation in the Climathon (24/07/2020)

| The City Council will participate in November in the largest initiative held worldwide to combat climate change | The Murcia City Council will participate for the fifth consecutive year in the Climathon, the largest worldwide initiative that is held to combat climate change.

In this 2020 the date chosen for its celebration is November 13.The Governing Board has approved at its meeting today the participation of Murcia in this international event.

The challenge proposed by the Consistory for this year is to gather the best ideas and proposals for inclusion in the elaboration of the Green Infrastructure Plan that will be designed by the Department of Sustainable Development and Huerta, which the mayor Antonio Navarro directs, and in which The professional colleges of Architects, Biologists and Agronomists, Forestry and Forest Engineers will participate to connect and value parks, gardens, orchards, forests and the Segura river.The three best proposals received will be recognized by the City Council.

The Local Energy and Climate Change Agency (ALEM) will be in charge of designing the actions that take place for Murcia's participation in this event.The City Council participates since 2016Murcia has been participating in this initiative since 2016, in which it collected ideas for the adaptation of the municipality to the fight against climate change.

In 2017 the chosen theme was the images for a resilient Murcia in 2030.In 2018 adaptation solutions were provided for a resilient Murcia in 2030 and in 2019 the theme was how to improve waste management in the Murcia garden.The challenge of building a carbon-free economyClimathon is an event designed by Climate-KIC, a European initiative to combat climate change that fosters public and private partnerships to meet the challenge of building a carbon-free economy.This initiative was launched for the first time on June 18, 2015, involving 19 cities around the world and more than 2.6 million people.

It is currently the largest event that exists around the challenges of climate change.In the last edition of 2019, 145 cities from 56 countries participated, with more than 6,500 participants, who provided more than 600 solutions for climate action, some defended from Murcia.Murcia is an international benchmark in the fight against climate changeMurcia is currently working to become an international, and therefore local, benchmark in the fight against climate change and is developing various municipal strategies that aim to reduce polluting emissions to the atmosphere and defend the environment.The Climathon event has been held since its inception in person, but with high impact and activity through social networks.

Due to the current situation on this occasion, each city may choose to hold an online event, maintaining the spirit and objectives of always.In the event that the event is held in person, the cities will take all the pertinent protection measures recommended by the health authorities to prevent contagion from the pandemic generated by the expansion of Covid-19.
