The University of Murcia incorporates for the first time in its CSR Report the international GRI standard (18/06/2020)

It is the fifth CSR Report of the institution, which accounts for its teaching, research, transfer activity, as well as social and environmental impacts The University of Murcia (UMU) publishes its 2018-19 Corporate Social Responsibility Report (CSR), the main novelty of which is the reporting of data following the international standard GRI (Global Reporting Initiative).

This is the fifth CSR Report of the UMU, which summarizes in 160 pages its teaching, research and transfer activity, as well as the commitment to digital transformation, internationalization, quality, entrepreneurship, culture, scientific dissemination or university chairs, among other topics. This CSR Report highlights that a total of 1,661 scientific papers were published at the UMU last year, in a year in which the public university of Murcia had 347 research groups and participated in 321 research projects at the regional level and national.

In addition, in the 2018-19 academic year, 293 doctoral theses were presented.

In the teaching section it had 27,524 undergraduate students, 2,449 masters and 2,341 doctorate students.

An academic year in which 6,103 graduates were counted. In the personnel section, during the 2018-19 academic year 262 positions were announced for teachers and, in the case of administrative personnel, 12 places in specific competitions for Administration and Services Personnel (PAS), 139 open access places and 199 places assigned to research projects. Committed to digital transformation The document sets out the commitment to digital transformation, since in 2019 the UMU Digital Strategy was approved with the aim of implementing digital transformation plans, ICT governance, promoting digital administration, security and protection of information, as well as digital literacy, strategic and technological support for teaching, research and university governance. In fact, the last academic year ended with 472 'Socrates' teaching and computer rooms -8 more than in the previous year-, of which 113 have an interactive whiteboard and 33 the video-note system. Internationalization The UMU maintains its commitment to internationalization with the aim of being an open, diverse and multicultural institution.

For this reason, it promotes exchanges with other universities, whether they are students, teaching and research staff (PDI), and PAS.

Thus, in 2018 it received 1,475 students -645 from the Erasmus program-, 49 PDI and 52 PAS; while 192 PDI and 45 PAS left the UMU abroad. Through the UMU European and International Projects Office (OPERUM), last year a total of 99 project applications were submitted, of which 15 are coordinated from the institution itself.

Funding has been obtained for 18 new European and international research projects, representing an income of 5 million euros. Employability The fifth CSR Report also includes the actions aimed at improving the employability of UMU students by developing their entrepreneurial and innovative capacity, supporting initiatives for self-employment and the creation of 'startups' as a way of creating value for the society.

In this sense, the 'UMU Emprende' program participated in 142 activities, in which 4,472 people participated. In parallel, throughout the past academic year the institutional and business chairs increased from 17 to 30, which means an increase in the resources obtained through agreements with 13 new public and private organizations. More than 11,500 scholarship students This publication also reflects the increase in scholarship students.

In the 2018-19 academic year, scholarships from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports amounted to more than 27 million euros - 2% more than the previous year -, which were awarded to 9,749 undergraduate and 658 master students. Regarding UMU's own scholarships, the amount was 736,041.48 euros, with 1,152 scholarships awarded to undergraduate students - 25% more than the previous year.

In sum, 11,559 scholarships were assigned to students during the past academic year. Scientific and cultural dissemination In scientific dissemination, numerous projects have been developed with a significant impact such as NAUKAS, MasterChem, Short Science, Science and Technology Week in the Region of Murcia, Curiosity or the Summer Scientific Campuses.

While the cultural level field more than 49,000 attendees have benefited from the 312 activities carried out through its Culture Service, which includes 6 cultural classrooms, Reading Club, University Museum, Choral and University Orchestra. The fifth CSR Report of the UMU also details its impact in areas such as the environment, equality, transparency or solidarity, as well as the work for the dissemination of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), developed at through ODSesiones.

In this sense, the UMU was among the 200 universities in the world most committed to the SDGs, according to the classification prepared by the prestigious British institution Times Higher Education (THE) in its 'THE Impact Ranking'. Sustainability and transparency Sustainability accounts for the environment, taking into account sustainable buildings, energy and resource consumption, the quality levels of the environment in which it is located -soil, water and air- and the management of the waste it generates.

It also highlights the actions dedicated to the management, awareness and environmental awareness of the university community in particular and society in general, through 'Sustainable Campus'. The UMU published its first CSR Report in 2009 and was, together with UNED, the first Spanish university to do so.

This publication is part of the institution's commitment to transparency and accountability, recognized annually by Dyntra, which placed the UMU as the third most transparent Spanish university.
