Murcia participates in a European project that recovers the nutrients from the wastewater to use them as fertilizers (02/06/2020)

| The Murcia Este treatment plant recovers up to 40% of the phosphorous stored by the 100,000 cubic meters of water it treats daily | Aguas de Murcia participates in a European project that recovers nutrients from wastewater to use as fertilizers.

Under the name Life Enrich, this initiative is being developed exclusively in the Murcia-Este treatment plant, from where up to 40% of the phosphorus stored by the 100,000 cubic meters of water that is treated daily at the facility is recovered. The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Development and Huerta, Antonio Navarro; and the Aguas de Murcia manager, Rafael Gómez, visited the Murcia-Este treatment plant this morning to supervise the execution of the Life Enrich project.

The general director of Community Water, Sebastián Delgado, also attended.José Ballesta stressed that "Emuasa is an example of management efficiency and contributes with his work to protect the environment, which is one of the main objectives of the government team."New treatment routeThe work being carried out at the Murcia-Este treatment plant has allowed the start-up of a new treatment route that enables the phosphorus and nitrogen that are present in the wastewater to be recovered through the production of a mineral called struvite and ammonium salts, two components that are used in the field. The methodology that Emuasa applies triples the recovery of phosphorus compared to the results obtained by the traditional method.

Furthermore, phosphorus is one of the main nutrients used as fertilizers in the agricultural sector, so the European project headed by Aguas de Murcia reports very important benefits for the field.Emuasa manages to recover such high levels of phosphorus thanks to the design of a new configuration of the sludge line that allows phosphorus to be extracted and separated by means of a process called anaerobic digestion.Phosphorus is considered a non-renewable natural resource and could become scarce in the future if current exploitation levels are maintained, so the work carried out by Aguas de Murcia is key.2.8 million budgetThe Life Enrich project has a total budget of 2.8 million.

Together with Emuasa, the CEtaqua Barcelona consortium (as coordinators), the Institute of Agri-Food Research and Technology, the Aigües Irrigation Community of Segarra Garrigues and the polytechnic universities of Catalonia and Valencia participate.Measures in the face of heavy rainfallOn the other hand, the installation of a regulation gate will limit the inlet flow to the Murcia-Este treatment plant to prevent the effects of episodes of heavy rain.

The project also includes the execution of a chest. The works are already underway and have a budget of 48,000 euros.

Aside from the gate and the manhole, asphalt chipboard will be laid out over an area of ??45 square meters.
