The City Council will remove asbestos from twenty public schools with a plan endowed with 1,800,000 euros (28/05/2020)

| The Plenary today approved the draft of the Decree certifying the first phase of delegation of these powers to the Murcian consistory by the Ministry of Education and Culture | The City Council, through the Department of Education and Infant Schools and Pedanías Barrios, will carry out over the next four years the removal of fiber cement roofing from a total of 20 public schools in the municipality of Murcia.The Plenary today approved the draft Decree certifying the delegation of these powers to the Murcian consistory by the Ministry of Education and Culture, an action that is carried out to streamline and facilitate these works.The removal of asbestos from educational centers will take place in several phases: this first one that begins now with the renovation of the roofs in the most affected centers and a later one in the rest of the schools, as well as the rest of the construction elements that contain this material.

.Coordination between councilsThis action is the result of coordinated work between the Department of Education and Nursery Schools, responsible for maintaining the infrastructure of educational centers, and that of Pedanías and Barrios, which through the Decentralization service is responsible for the execution of the works.“The constant improvement and conservation of these spaces is a priority for the City Council, since our children must grow and develop in safe places.

Once the draft Decree was received, work began on the viability of the proposal from Decentralization, which has already been accepted as favorable.

 The Murcia City Council continues with the improvement of infrastructure in districts to improve the quality of public services throughout the municipality.In the words of Marco Antonio Fernández, “investing in districts is contributing to the structuring of the municipality, which is why we face this work with the utmost responsibility, contributing with this delegation not only to the improvement of our infrastructures, but also to the efficiency of the Public Management".The head of Decentralization adds that "this is only the first phase, but they have already started working on the rest of the elements that will be subject to removal due to their fiber cement content."Action scheduleThe performance will be carried out in a total of twenty educational centers in the municipality of Murcia over four years, distributed as follows:Biennium 2020-2021: CEIP Antonio Delgado Dorrego (Sangonera la Verde), CEIP Carolina Codorniu-1 (Churra), CEIP Contraparara -1 (Javalí Nuevo), CEIP Juan Carlos I (Llano de Brujas), CEIP Pintor Pedro Flores (Puente Tocinos ), CEIP Pablo Gil Castillo (Sangonera la Seca), CEIP Francisco Sánchez Matas (Aljucer), CEIP Santiago García Medel (Era Alta).Biennium 2022-2023: CEIP Escultor Salzillo (San Ginés), CEIP Nicolás Raya (Sangonera la Verde), CEIP Virgen del Rosario (Monteagudo), CEIP Nuestra Señora de La Paz (Murcia), CEIP Infanta Elena (Beniaján), CEIP Virgen de la Vega (Cobatillas), CEIP Antonio Díaz (Los Garres), CEIP Francisco Salzillo (Los Ramos) CEIP Los Garres (San José de la Montaña), CEIP Puente Doñana (La Albatalía), CEIP Cristo de la Expiración (Santa Cruz) and CEIP Barriomar (Barium of the Purísima).The municipality of Murcia has a total of 116 centers for Early Childhood and Primary Education, of which 36 require this action.

The work is carried out in phases, which will start with this first batch of 20 schools and will subsequently continue with the remaining 16.FinancingThe financing of the drafting of the project and subsequent execution of the works of removal and replacement of the roofs of the affected centers will be enhanced with charge to budgetary allocations of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Autonomous Community for an amount of 1,789,300 euros .Specifically, the amounts for annuities will be: 2020 (265,700 euros), 2021 (550,000 euros), 2022 (500,000 euros) and 2023 (473,600 euros).Energy Efficiency and Bioclimatic Reconversion PlanThe Decree sets out the objective of gradually complying with European regulations that urge the removal of asbestos from all public buildings by 2032, given its harmful effect on health and its replacement by less dangerous ones.In this sense, the Councilor for Education points out that "despite the planned schedule, the objective is to shorten the action in time and speed up the work to finish as soon as possible."The Ministry of Education and Culture has carried out an inventory of the roofs with presence of support in the different educational centers of the Region resulting from said inventory the Energy Efficiency and Bioclimatic Reconversion Plan.This contemplates the performance of 172 actions in 166 educational centers, so that being many centers in which the replacement of covers is necessary, it has been considered useful to delegate the competence to carry them out.
