Murcia chairs the Eurocities digital citizenship working group (26/05/2020)

| The councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government opened this morning a virtual meeting, organized by the network of European cities, on the use of new technologies for local management | The City Council is in a process of transforming the municipality in which participation is key to making decisions about projects that benefit all citizens."Public administrations must guarantee the highest levels of participation and open government and now more than ever, in these difficult times, we must be as close as possible to our citizens in decision-making and in the management of the public.

It is necessary to address how cities can achieve solutions to local challenges through digital technologies and tools, "says Mercedes Bernabé, councilor for Urban Agenda and Open Government, who opened this morning a virtual meeting of digital citizenship of the Society Forum of Knowledge of Eurocities, chaired by Murcia and Genoa.The meeting had 34 participants from 22 European cities -Debrecen, Ghent, Rotterdam, Milan, Utrecht, Porto, Kungsback, Rennes Metropole, Paris, Belfast, Antwerp, Pau Béarn Pyrénées, Timisoara, Manchester, Warsaw, Bologna, Glasgow, Palermo , Valladolid, Oulu, Murcia and Genoa.This working group focuses its attention on the importance of connecting the citizen with municipal management through digital tools and social networks.

In this way, cities exchange experiences on the subject and analyze success stories carried out.Other highlights of the meeting have been the need to promote new technologies for the participatory process, the presentation of a questionnaire for a comparative study on digital citizenship in the participating cities, a communication plan for the group's actions and the presentation of success stories.Four public consultations underwayThe Department of Urban Agenda and Open Government has implemented different practices in terms of citizen participation through digital tools in order to ensure their direct intervention in public management.Specifically, since the period of confinement began on March 14, the Murcia City Council has launched, through different citizen participation tools, four public consultations.

"The results have been quite positive, since participation has been increased considerably compared to the period prior to confinement," explains the councilor.Participation processes during the state of alarm have focused on preparing the diagnosis for the Circular Economy Strategy, both for citizens and for the City's Social Council, the Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy for the Social Council and the dissemination campaign to raise awareness and implement the collection of organic waste for its revaluation through the European project Valuewaste.Eurocities highlights 'Cultural Reagents'Eurocities is the main network of European cities with more than 250,000 inhabitants.

It unites more than 140 of the largest cities in Europe, which among them govern 130 million citizens in 39 countries.The 'Cultural Reagents' program, launched by the City Council, through the Department of Culture and Heritage Recovery, has been highlighted by Eurocities as an example of management and support for the cultural sector during the Covid-19 crisis.

 The program is structured around nine calls or 'Calls for projects'.

These open and transparent public calls represent an innovation in cultural management allowing artists and creatives of any artistic discipline to present their projects to the Consistory for evaluation.

They are aimed at artists of any origin, whether from Murcia, from other parts of Spain or internationally.
