Traffic and pollution have been reduced by 60% during the two months of confinement (21/05/2020)

in the same period of 2019 | The councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, visited this morning the Traffic Control Room where daily circulatory movements in the urban area are recorded.After analyzing the data, it has been concluded that the measures adopted since last March of confinement and reduction of activities have led to a reduction in mobility and air pollution.Thus, in this time, traffic and pollution have been reduced by around 60%, with the estimated reduction in CO2 emissions from road traffic being between 4.19 and 5.18 tons per day less on each road where they are located.

samplings.From March 14, and compared to the data recorded during the previous week, the data recorded at different gauging points began to be studied in three main groups:- On the streets of the city center, to study the behavior of traffic in the interior, including small routes and the most typical traffic in the central core of the city.- In the exits of the city, with which the exit points are mainly seen and their behavior during the alarm state.- At the entrances to the city, with which the changes in the influx points are analyzed, mainly, of labor movements (during the week) and of leisure (on weekends)From the beginning of the present situation, displacements in general, and in particular road traffic, began to decrease appreciably.According to the data recorded at different gauging points in the city of Murcia, significant reductions can be seen both in the entrance to the city and in the exits, and also in internal traffic in the city center.Comparing the data obtained from March 7 to April 30 of this year with that of 2019, 338,383 fewer vehicles circulated through the city center, 452,655 for entrances and 487,099 for exits.Compared to the same period last year, in the months of March and April, there is a reduction in all traffic.In this way, the average values ??reach reductions of 56.6% in the center, 52.8% in arrivals and 51.8% in departures, during the same period in March.For April the reductions are 65.4% in the center, 63.1% at the entrances and 64.9% at the exits.This reduction in traffic is shown differently between weekends and weekdays.The punctual values ??of less traffic, and consequently the greatest reductions in mobility, are shown, in addition to Sundays, on specific dates, such as March 19, the feast of San José; April 5, Palm Sunday; on April 9 and 10, Thursday and Good Friday, respectively; and on May 1, Labor Day.Councilwoman Rebeca Pérez has explained that "this shows how confinement has been respected to the maximum by Murcia, regardless of those trips that were not strictly necessary."For weeks, mobility is progressively reduced in the first weeks, being minimum during the two weeks in which the recoverable paid leave was decreed (weeks from March 28 to April 3 and from April 4 to April 10).The maximum reduction in mobility was reached during week 4 (from April 4 to 10), coinciding with Easter, where values ??were recorded between 82.8% in departures and 84.1% in centers and entrances.The reduction in traffic at the beginning, in week 2 (from March 21 to 27), ranged from values ??of 73.2% at entrances and 74.1% at exits and 76.3% in the center.From week 7 (from April 25 to May 1), where activity is recovering, the values ??obtained become similar to week 2 (from March 21 to 27).81 chambers and 319 turnsThe different traffic light facilities are put into operation from the Traffic Control Room, according to the traffic plans generated by the traffic needs.For this, it has the help, among other equipment, of street sensors to know the state of traffic in real time, such as cameras and turns that allow knowing the intensity of traffic in real time.The Traffic Control Room currently has 81 cameras distributed by the municipality: 71 motorized cameras for monitoring the traffic state and 10 fixed cameras installed in the Atalayas tunnels (6) and Plaza de Castilla (4).It also has 319 measurement points or turns.
