The Department for the Elderly signs an agreement with Adopt a Grandfather to accompany the elderly who live alone (17/05/2020)

| Through the project "Minutes in Company", a group of volunteers will provide free telephone attention to the more than 14,000 elderly living alone in the municipality and want to participate in this solidarity initiative | The Murcia City Council, through the Department for the Elderly, Disability and Development Cooperation led by Paqui Pérez, is going to sign a collaboration agreement with the Adopta Un Abuelo association to give free telephone support to the elderly in the municipality who live alone or they are in a situation of risk or social exclusion.The agreement, which does not contemplate the assumption of financial commitments for any of the parties, begins its validity from the day of its signature and will end when the confinement circumstances derived from the state of alarm conclude.

In any case, its validity may not go beyond December 31, 2020.Under the name "Minutes in Company", a group of volunteers will offer telephone support to the more than 14,000 older people who live alone in Murcia and wish to participate in this solidarity initiative, through which they will be able to share a talk with the volunteers.

It will help them to socialize and increase their feeling of company and security.VolunteersVolunteers will be selected based on their previous collaboration in projects related to caring for people at risk of loneliness.

They will also receive prior training so that the quality of the service is optimal.In addition, they will only serve people who seek company to combat isolation.

The volunteers' attention will be carried out through a switchboard that allows calls to be forwarded, facilitating solidarity work from their homes.

When calls do not have this objective, professionals will forward them to 010 or other contact numbers where their needs can be addressed.The Adopt a Grandfather association will periodically provide the Murcia City Council with information on the elderly people served and the actions carried out during the duration of the agreement.For its part, the Murcian town hall undertakes to promote the program on the web and institutional social networks and to spread it throughout the municipality of Murcia.Since 2014, Adopta Un Abuelo connects generations through telephone and recurring accompaniment.

Its objective is for the elderly to feel accompanied and listened to, while the participants learn values ??and experiences during the visits.

The program, in addition to accompanying older people, aims to pay tribute to their figure.

To date, it has been implemented in 54 Spanish municipalities, having loaned more than 31,000 company hours, and has a total of 2,000 participants.
