Pedestrian crossings that raise awareness and protect against the coronavirus (06/05/2020)

José Ballesta: "Improving the collective health status of Murcia and sustainability are the two elements that guide our actions in the field of mobility, and which are articulated on three axes: pedestrianization, cycling and the promotion of public transport" .The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, attended today the first works of painting the messages of awareness and individual and collective responsibility, which are materializing in different pedestrian crossings of the municipality."Improving the collective health status of Murcia and sustainability, while maintaining levels of environmental quality, are the two fundamental elements that guide the various actions in the field of mobility that we are going to present over the next few weeks and that are articulated around three axes: pedestrianization, cycling and the promotion of safe public transport ”, José Ballesta reported. The initiative presented today is part of those measures by which the pedestrian gains new spaces in the city and presents four benefits: “The orderly circulation on the right thanks to the indicators, the extension of the zebra crossings one meter on each side, increasing green time for pedestrians and awareness messages to reinforce individual responsibility, ”said the mayor. In a first phase, this initiative will reach more than 100 pedestrian crossings, in the busiest areas and avenues of the city, as well as in the surroundings of hospitals, such as Reina Sofía, Gran Vía, Martínez Tornel Avenue , Lieutenant Flomesta, etc.In addition to the awareness messages, indicative signs have been painted to facilitate the orderly passage of pedestrians, indicating with strips and the figure of a pedestrian the passage both to one side and the other of the road.In addition, the width of some of the pedestrian crossings is increased by 2 meters (one meter on each side) to promote physical distance. In the same way and until traffic normalization, the increase in green time for pedestrian crossing will be maintained, favoring the agile movement of people and avoiding the accumulation of pedestrians in waiting times."Very soon we will hug, now let's keep the distance"Among the awareness messages, the following recommendations stand out: “Very soon we will embrace, now we will keep our distance”, “Walking is good for you and for the environment.

You are doing great ”,“ Playing sports, keeping the physical distance, it feels really good ”,“ Keep the safe distance ”,“ Put on the mask, it is important ”.Pedestrianization, bike and public transportJosé Ballesta detailed the three main measures that are being applied in the municipality of Murcia in terms of mobility: permanent and provisional pedestrianization, the increase in cycle paths and safety in public transport.“Permanently, we have opened 50,000 m2 and we already have another 20,000 m2 more planned.

On a provisional basis, we have closed Gran Vía de Murcia to road traffic every Sunday and holiday, so that people can walk through this artery with the necessary physical distance, "he said.Regarding the increase in bike lanes, he noted that "we have 125 km of permanent roads and we are going to increase them now with 10 km more of provisional roads.""Collective transport is being abandoned in large cities in favor of private vehicles, given the population's health insecurity.

We must provide the necessary security for public transport, maintaining the safety distance, providing it with masks, "stressed the Mayor of Murcia.
