"The expansion of the dining room scholarship allows us to guarantee the livelihood of many minors in our municipality" (29/04/2020)

Since the state of alarm entered into force, the municipal groups Podemos and PSOE have worked together to help the government team detect new social needs and thus adjust municipal actions to the circumstances of the municipality of Murcia. Both formations will defend in the next plenary session of the Murcia City Council on April 30 a joint motion requesting the extension of both economic and temporary coverage of the dining grant and that it be extended during the holiday period. As a consequence of the closing of the school centers, the Murcia City Council decided to replace the dining room service with the delivery to the beneficiaries of a coin card in which the amount of the meals would be charged.

This would not be a major inconvenience were it not for the fact that it took fifteen days to make this decision and since then this same delay in income has dragged on.

On the other hand, some 450 cards are still pending distribution according to sources from the Department of Social Services since the list of the addresses of the beneficiary boys and girls that the Autonomous Community gave them contained many errors."The food needs of minors have never understood administrative deadlines, much less in a situation in which the socioeconomic situation of families is rapidly worsening, which requires an immediate and effective response from the City Council", declare Ginés Ruiz Maciá and José Antonio Serrano Martínez, spokespersons for both groups. Both Municipal Groups are concerned not only with the ineffectiveness with which the City Council's decision to substitute the dining room scholarships with menedero cards is being applied, but also that the need for help is not limited to school days.

¨In a situation in which socioeconomic conditions have worsened and in which the families benefiting from this aid have even more difficulties than before the pandemic, we believe it necessary for the City Council, as the closest institution, to use all its resources to support them not only on school days if not also on non-school days and vacation periods taking advantage of the dining scholarships, which allows us to plan, quantify and guarantee the livelihood of many minors in our municipality.
