PSOE and Podemos-Equo ask the House to universalize the telecare service for those over 75 years of age (27/04/2020)

Both formations consider that the expansion of this municipal service represents an opportunity to avoid the solitude and isolation of this group, which in the municipality is made up of more than 2,700 people, and would allow them to improve their autonomy, their safety and the connection with the reality The municipal groups of PSOE and Podemos-Equo will defend in the next plenary session of the Murcia City Council on Thursday a joint motion to request that the municipal telecare service reach all the residents over 75 years old, especially to guarantee their protection.

and mitigate one of the big problems that older people suffer, loneliness. Councilors Esther Nevado, of the PSOE, and Clara Martínez, of Podemos-Equo, consider that new technologies, specifically those that facilitate telecare services, represent an opportunity to avoid loneliness and isolation for the elderly.

In addition, they allow them to improve their autonomy, their security, the connection with reality and communication, since they can facilitate regular contact with their socio-family environment, ensuring immediate intervention in situations of personal, social or medical crisis. Currently, the telecare service provided by the Murcia City Council serves a total of 3,139 people, of whom 1,970 live alone, at a cost of € 519,465.10.

One of the requirements to receive this service is to live alone.

Precisely, according to the statistical portal of the Region of Murcia, around 20,000 people over the age of 80 reside in the municipality of Murcia, of whom 2,790 live alone. Therefore, locating these people, especially those suffering from unwanted loneliness, "is essential to guarantee adequate care in the event of an emergency situation such as the one we are experiencing as a result of the spread of COVID-19, especially when we are being warned of the need to prepare for similar situations that may occur in the autumn and that it is necessary for this Corporation to be a pioneer and we are ahead of a problem that is leading to the aging of the population and the change in the model of society ", the councilors point out. They also indicate that "we are facing a moment of mentality change, we must put the protection and well-being of people at the center of municipal policies and we must respond to current demands and provide our social services with security and stability what do you need". For all this, in addition to requesting the Plenary to universalize telecare for all people over 75 years of age who live in the municipality, offering them a free permanent service that guarantees contact and intervention in case of need with the possibility of reducing the age of access in the event that it is deemed appropriate, it is also proposed that the City Council urgently put in place the necessary mechanisms for the elaboration and implementation of the Plan to combat loneliness of the elderly in the municipality of Murcia, such and as agreed in the plenary session of October 2018. .
