Terra Natura increases its family of birds with the birth of 15 baby ducks in the middle of spring (25/04/2020)

| Five specimens belong to the species pardilla teal, endangered by its low population in the Iberian Peninsula | The Terra Natura nature and animal park has increased its family of birds with the birth of 15 baby ducks, one of the zoo's most numerous species.Specifically, these are seven specimens from the mallard or blue duck family, five from the gray teal family and three from the red duck.

All the young are in perfect condition and their respective mothers have taken care of the chicks at all times since they gave birth.“We celebrate the birth of these species in our most emblematic park, because with the new offspring the Terra Natura wetland already has around 300 specimens.

The park facilities are closed to the public, but the animals continue with their lives thanks to the team of professionals who watch over their care every day ”, explains the councilor for Urban Development and Modernization of the Administration, José Guillén.

Among the newly born species, the brown teal stands out for its vulnerability, due to its low population in the Iberian Peninsula.

Therefore, its reproduction in captivity favors and contributes to the conservation of this bird.

Teal chickens leave the nest as soon as they are born and feed on their own, but they have the mother's care. The Terra Natura Murcia facilities have been closed to the public since the declaration of the state of alarm, a measure also agreed by the City Council's Public Health Committee.During this time, veterinarians and caretakers continue to ensure the care of all species, maintaining their main tasks ranging from feeding, environmental enrichment activities, cleaning of spaces, as well as the necessary revision and monitoring plan to ensure perfect condition.

of the animals, while complying with a strict protocol of health prevention to avoid possible contagion of COVID-19 between employees and the animals themselves.Virtual visit to the park through social networksThe City Council, through the Department of Urban Development and Administration Modernization, is showing the park's activity to the public through social networks during this period of confinement. Thus, caregivers and veterinarians have, with different videos broadcast on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the main maintenance tasks of the different species that inhabit the facilities, from giraffes, brown bears, hippos, bats or hyenas, among others.

Likewise, the educators at the Terra Natura school also propose activities and craft exercises so that the little ones can do it from home and with their family.
