The Galilea de Cáritas Commissary opens, with the support of the Murcia City Council, to attend to the most vulnerable people (21/04/2020)

The Diocese of Cartagena, through Cáritas, opens the doors of the Galilea Commissary in the city of Murcia, to guarantee the access of vulnerable people to basic food and hygiene products, completing the aid that the 63 parish Caritas offer in the center of the capital and in the districts of the municipality.The Murcia City Council supports Cáritas in the opening of this store to guarantee the supply of more than 2,000 families.

To this end, it has transferred a municipal building of more than 400 square meters, located in Fica, for the opening of this center.

, and has promised to pay the costs of electricity and water.Before the Covid-19 health crisis, Cáritas accompanied 5,000 families in the Murcia area through its parish centers and its territorial headquarters, with projects linked to the coverage of basic needs (food, hygiene, medicines, water , electricity, gas, butane, rent) and social promotion with educational reinforcement initiatives, healthy leisure, psychosocial support for minors and families, employment-oriented training and support for inclusion in the world of work.

People who have seen their economic income decrease or disappear, as a result of this pandemic, have turned to the Social Services and Caritas to ask for help when facing their difficult situation.

It is estimated that 100 people go through the Galilea Commissary of Caritas daily in the first months of its implementation.This morning, the vicar of the Murcia area, José Sánchez, has accompanied the mayor, José Ballesta, along with the councilor for Family and Social Rights, and those responsible for Cáritas Diocese of Cartagena, at the opening of the Galilea Commissary in Fica , in which fresh and frozen food will be distributed, as well as hygiene and cleaning products to the most vulnerable Murcian families for free.The Secretary General of Cáritas, Juan Antonio Illán, explained that this store is a project "that reflects the effort of Murcian society to meet basic food and hygiene needs and dignify their access to families at a time when the demand has skyrocketed.

”A team of 70 volunteers from Cáritas in the municipality of Murcia and from the vicariates of Murcia, Suburban I and Suburban II are involved in the project, which will allow its opening from Monday to Saturday, morning and afternoon, guaranteeing security measures and Social distance to prevent the spread of Covid-19.Galilea joins the network of stores that Cáritas has in the Region of Murcia, in Cartagena, Lorca, Torre Pacheco and Fuente Álamo, dignifying the acquisition of basic products in a standard environment in which people can choose their shopping cart based on your tastes, preferences and needs.The logistics center of Cáritas in the Region of Murcia, located in the Murcian district of Sangonera La Seca, centralizes the purchases made by the Church and the donations of individuals and companies that with the onset of the crisis have increased to meet growing demand.

It will also be in charge of preparing the premises and furnishings of the Galilea Commissary for its opening.The implementation of this store has been possible, in part, thanks to donations from many companies and collaborators in Murcia that have responded to the call by Cáritas and the City Council for the care of the most vulnerable people in the municipality.
