The Mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, declared this morning culture as an essential activity in the municipality of Murcia in an open letter addressed to the sector, in which he announced the launch of the 'Cultural Reagents' program, with which They will inject more than 700,000 euros into this activity, which will involve the immediate contracting of cultural projects.

The health crisis has brought to a standstill and cancellation of hundreds of cultural events planned for the coming months, and will cause foreseeable difficulties in restoring normality in the near future - due to the limitations that may be established regarding the attendance of people at events. , capacity, etc., - reasons why the City Council launched the 'Cultural Reagents' program, facing the way out of the crisis caused by the coronavirus.

“We are experiencing a crisis that is affecting all the structures of society.

And when a change of epoch takes place, the societies that come out the strongest are not the most technologically advanced, nor the strongest in the economic sphere, but the most mature and culturally and intellectually advanced societies, for which I consider the declaration of culture as an essential activity for the municipality of Murcia â€, José Ballesta pointed out in this open letter, spread through social networks.

"The people who make up the cultural sector must be protagonists in the coming years. To contribute their reflections and analysis, to help us move forward without ever losing our identity. Tradition, current affairs and future. Roots and wings," stressed the Murcia councilman.

Immediate contracting of artistic projects

The declaration of culture as an essential activity will have an immediate reflection on the measures that will be implemented by the Murcia City Council in the coming days to deal with the COVID-19 crisis and the articulation of strategic projects in the coming years. years.

Firstly, the City Council will launch the 'Cultural Reactives' project, which will be endowed with more than 700,000 euros for the immediate contracting of cultural projects, which will be a stimulus for the artists and creatives of the municipality.

This initiative will allow you to start working from the first moment, even when you are in a confinement situation, since an important part of cultural action begins with reflection, documentation, learning and experimentation, the writing of performances, etc.

'Cultural Reactives' will be structured around nine lines of action that will be published successively over the next few weeks on the website of the Department of Culture of the Murcia City Council.

The calls will be open to all professionals in the sector and will include all artistic and creative disciplines (performing and plastic arts; poetry and literature; audiovisuals; artistic experimentation and digital and technological innovation; artistic lighting; large format installations; photography ; design; architecture; artistic direction and social research; anthropological, heritage and ethnographic, etc.).

The selected projects will be developed during this year 2020 and the possibility of establishing payments on account is foreseen to facilitate creative activity from the first moment.

“As a result of the experience of recent weeks, where the consumption of online culture has exceeded all records, the projects promoted through these contracts must have a reflection in the digital world.

From the City Council we will create a platform to accommodate all of them, with exclusive content, reflections and approaches.

A platform that we intend to become the digital mirror of the culture of the municipality of Murcia and of our network of cultural centers, museums and archives of Murcia, "said José Ballesta.

Other measures to face the health crisis

In addition to launching the 'Cultural Reagents', the City Council will incorporate the Cultural and Creative Industries sector within the lines of help of the Social Support and Economic Activation Plan of the Murcia City Council.

A new cultural model for Murcia will also be developed, which will revolve around four axes: supporting local talent in all its stages, creating an ecosystem of cultural production through economic plans and making infrastructure available, specialization in the cultural exhibition on the street as part of our identity and the approach of culture to new audiences to favor the advance and critical development of society.
