Podemos-EQUO: "Social spending is not foreseen as a priority in the Murcia City Council" (06/04/2020)

The items in the next budgets should be reoriented towards prioritizing social spending.

Thousands of people have lost their jobs and social needs, requests for emergency benefits, rental aid and the resources that third sector entities will demand are going to multiply.

"There is in our municipal budgets a contingency fund of almost 2 million euros. Do you think that there has been, or will be, a social emergency, a more terrible contingency than this? I think not and above all, I hope not," declares the councilor Clara Baeza.

It is urgent to articulate a contingency plan with sufficient economic endowment and with different spending scenarios, with all the own funds and those that will come (the proportional part of the 10 million euros for social spending that the Autonomous Community of the State will receive).

Even with the limitations established by the central government, it is possible to tackle this crisis by putting life at the center and investing in public policies for the social majority.

Creating a real and effective plan to expand the dining room scholarships, which benefit 3,000 children in our municipality, from today to the end of the year, is a crucial decision to alleviate the situation of children and families who have a lot more difficult to access certain resources with this break in life.

Currently, the City Council decided to deliver some rechargeable cards electronically with about 5 euros for each child receiving the scholarship for a total of ten days: the 10 working days of the first two weeks of the state of Alarma.

Weekends have not been included.

This action is not enough, we must help, by all means, these people not to fall into a profound impoverishment, at least momentarily.

We need powerful social measures with a vocation to endure over time.

From the Municipal Group Podemos we show our utmost concern for older people who are alone and who lack family networks, and also people with disabilities who live in solitude.

"We propose an immediate agreement with the College of Social Workers to give support to these people, of course, but also to prepare assessment reports or carry out functions similar to those already performed by currently active city council social workers," proposes Ginés. Ruiz, spokesperson for the municipal group Podemos.

Given that the municipal social services lack sufficient structure to deploy the social policies that are needed at a time like this, we consider this part to be mandatory, as the Murcia City Council Social Workers' pool is empty.

In the social services of the City Council of our municipality there are 1200 files paralyzed since September of Urgent Aid Needs.

As Mayor Ballesta told us, since Friday, March 29, there are four people dedicated to decongesting this inexplicable plug and "taking forward" about 150 files.

For more than a week we have not been aware that not a single family has received the resolution granting the aid.

These aids are for eating, dressing, for basic personal hygiene ...

"When governing for all citizens, these situations should not happen, because it means leaving many people behind and overloading social entities with a responsibility that is, always, public, the general interest," declares Clara Martínez Baeza.

Also essential are social support policies for vulnerable families, with or without children;

for adults without resources and those aimed at people in situations of extreme exclusion who live on the street.

"We think about today, of course, but we must be prepared for what will happen in the coming months. In the avalanche of aid that we will need to be able to pay for water, electricity, food, food or rent. We cannot continue taking weeks, if not months, to give a simple appointment: we must take advantage of these days to simplify administrative procedures, we are talking about situations in which being late is almost the same as not arriving, "said the spokesman for the municipal group.

"We have attended many meetings of the Public Health Committee in which the point on social measures on the Agenda was not the first. Today more than ever, the responsibility of the government must lead us to put everyone's life at the center and of all. We cannot allow anyone to be left behind. "

For all these reasons, our municipal group is preparing the request for an extraordinary plenary session, "since they can already be held telematically after the reform of article 46.3 of the Basic Regulatory Law of the Local Regime, a plenary session in which we will request a surrender. accounts of what has been done so far by the Government Team, and we will propose a series of measures aimed at improving the management of this health crisis, and the economic and social crisis, "says Ginés Ruiz.

Let our government team take note: charity is not enough.

The responsibility of the Murcia government is to manage this crisis from the public thinking of all and all Murcia.

We are not talking about something that is done from solidarity or voluntarism;

We are talking about a determined government action aimed at leaving no one behind, to take care of all the people who make up Murcian society;

to all.
