The documentary "The old prison speaks", made by UMU students, opens to all Murcians (27/03/2020)

Three years ago, Jeanette Conesa Paredes and Blanca Pérez de Tudela, Journalism students from the University of Murcia, decided to tell in their Final Degree Project the story of a unique building in the city, which is, in turn, part of the Murcia's own history: the old prison, a property closed and abandoned for decades, through which Murcians roam daily without having any idea of the stories it stores within its walls.

The result was "The old prison speaks. Prisoners of memory", a documentary of almost 40 minutes in length that reviews some of the most important events in the building, and in which several people participate, especially two survivors of the civil war: the former republican officer José Fuentes Yepes and the teacher Pepe Castaño, who died a year after filming.

"The work they comment- was born with the intention of being the narration of its own history, but at the same time, it was intended to be a tribute to the forgotten memory and to all the prisoners who were imprisoned in it, especially those of Francoism."

From the beginning, the authors wanted to make the entire documentary available to everyone: "The project was born for people. For all those who helped us shoot it, for those who were unaware of the history of the prison and, above all, for those who lived it and the passage of time had been forgetting, for the forgotten ", but it has been due to the quarantine that has confined us to all Spaniards for almost two weeks, when they have decided to open it:" Now that We are going slowly, that the days are slow, that we need to have things within our reach that make this kidnapping easier and the time less heavy. "

The authors affirm that with this provision available to everyone, "The old jail speaks closes stage, but we will continue to monitor the issue."

"The building they affirm- remains in ruins, abandoned. Its history continues under stealth, put on pause", they comment, to conclude that "hopefully this quarantine will also serve for our politicians to reflect and finally give this building and its people the place it deserves "
