The University of Murcia registers 3,560 classes by videoconference the first seven school days of the confinement (26/03/2020)

The administration staff continues their work thanks to almost 600 virtual desks and the performance of administrative tasks by telematic means

The computer and technical measures adopted by the University of Murcia since last March 11, three days before the declaration of the state of alarm, have allowed the university community, made up of 35,000 people, to adapt in record time notable for telecommuting.

These measures, implemented by the Vice-Rector's Office for Strategy and Digital University and the area of information and communications technologies (ÁTICA), have allowed management, research and teaching tasks to be carried out with the same common tools used in person on the campus and buildings of the University.

One of the keys to making this whole process a successful one is the rapid adaptation of students and staff to the new uses of online work.

One of the figures that this adaptation shows is that in the first seven school days after the decree of the state of alarm 3,560 classes were held by videoconference through the virtual classroom of the University of Murcia.

This is the most used resource for teaching in this period and has counted to date with the participation of 29,947 students and teachers in them.

The recordings of these classes represent a total of 26,068 minutes of classes.

Although videoconferencing is the most widely used resource, it is not the only one available in the virtual classroom, as there are others that are being used intensively by teachers.

Visits and connections through the virtual classroom have grown by 50% and since the week prior to the state of alarm there have been almost 11 million events in the virtual classroom, when it is normal for that number of events to occur throughout of a whole month full of intense use, such as January, a month of exams and a lot of activity on the platform.

The usual thing on a working day with a high workload on the platform was about 400,000 visits to the virtual classroom, a figure that has currently risen to 600,000.

The increase is reflected even on Sundays, which have gone from 200,000 connections to more than 300,000;

an increasing trend.

Regarding the work of the administration and services staff, the management activity is being developed thanks to teleworking by connecting to the university office network with almost 600 virtual desks, remote access to networked disks from homes. to carry out tasks that do not require those desks and the diversion of 500 telephones to personal landlines and mobiles.

From ATICA, other actions have been carried out to promote teleworking, such as the possibility of telematic issuance of electronic certificates that until now required attendance.

All this volume of telematic work has been able to get started so fast, firstly, because both the teaching tools and the virtual desks that allow remote connection to the servers of the University of Murcia have been working for years.

However, going in two days from being a face-to-face university to carrying out all the tasks in a virtual way has involved a technical effort to be able to give a correct answer that had been planned since the beginning of March.

Among other measures, the response capacity of the servers has been expanded, expanding the number of processing nodes in the virtual classroom that has been the most demanded service.

In addition, user guides have been prepared to explain the operation of virtual tools to University staff and students, and the user service has been reinforced to give proper attention to requests and calls for questions or technical incidents.

The speed and efficiency in responding to the particular problems of the users are resolved in the same times and with the usual quality standards.

The University of Murcia wants to reiterate that all this has been possible thanks to the very high predisposition of the teaching staff, students and administration and service personnel to achieve this rapid adaptation of academic activity.

Without it, all of this would have been impossible and thus, among all, the UMU continues to be active in this state of alarm in which we must all be confined to our home.
