Murcia City Council and Ferrovial Servicios design a protocol on waste collection and management (18/03/2020)

The Murcia City Council, through the Department of Sustainable Mobility and Youth, and the concessionaire Ferrovial Servicios have designed a protocol on waste collection and management following the guidelines of the Ministry of Ecological Transition.

Since the contaminated residues of an infected by COVID19 can be dangerous for the safety of the rest of the people who live with it, correct treatment of the generated remains must be carried out to avoid possible contagion.

It is essential to use disposable cleaning elements, to properly insulate the trash in a plastic bag, and exhaustive personal hygiene after treating this waste.

Thus, the patient's waste, including the disposable material used by the sick person and their caregivers (gloves, handkerchiefs, masks), must be disposed of in a plastic bag in a dustbin arranged in the room, preferably with a lid and pedal opening, without making any separation for recycling.

The plastic bag where it is deposited must be closed properly and put it in a second garbage bag where the used gloves will also be deposited and will be closed properly before leaving the room.

This second bag, with the previous waste, will be deposited in a third garbage bag with the rest of the household waste.

This will also be closed properly and will be deposited exclusively in the rest fraction container, it is strictly prohibited to deposit it in the separate collection containers of any of the separated fractions (organic, packaging, paper, glass or textile) or its abandonment in the environment.

In the case of households without positives or in quarantine, the separation of the waste will be carried out as usual.

It is important to remind citizens of the importance of minimizing the remaining fraction separated from the different fractions (paper / cardboard, glass, packaging, organic if applicable), and depositing only the waste corresponding to such fractions in their containers.

Lastly, the latex or nitrile gloves used to make the purchase or other uses are not containers and therefore should not be deposited in the yellow.

Regarding the fraction of the rest container, the collection was transferred to the Cañada Hermosa Treatment Center where the personnel have received training in the treatment of these residues.

Thus, in no case will the fraction bags that will be destined directly to landfill be manually opened.

In the event that prior treatments are necessary to deposit them in landfills, they will be carried out automatically, admitting manual selection only for the separation of bulky, metallic or others.

The recovery of materials will only be carried out automatically;

To maximize security, in case of risk and prior notice from the competent authorities, they may agree that the materials are stored for at least 72 hours.

Specific protocols for the protection of workers are being developed in this treatment center.

The Councilor for Sustainable Mobility and Youth, Rebeca Pérez, that "we all have to be aware of the exceptional situation in which we find ourselves and that we must all be responsible and pay attention to what the experts say. In this special situation we must continue to be consistent and try to produce as little waste as possible to minimize the economic and ecological impact of garbage treatment. "
