MercaMurcia maintains its usual activity and guarantees the supply of fresh food (16/03/2020)

The supply is not at risk and there have even been increases in the commercialization of fruits, vegetables and meat, with 500 tons per day sold and a flow of more than 2,100 vehicles per day.

The more than 150 companies that operate in the 300,000 m2 Center and that supply retailers to food stores, food stores and supermarkets throughout the Region and its area of ​​influence, maintain their daily activities.

Mercamurcia maintains its activity in its usual schedule with absolute normality, and has not been affected by the situation caused by the coronavirus, so the supply of fresh food is guaranteed.

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, visited the facilities this morning together with the managing director of Mercamurcia, Ricardo Rubio.

Marketing in the different Markets of the Mercamurcia Food Logistics Distribution Center has been carried out with absolute normality and merchandise traffic is expected for these dates and similar to those that have occurred in previous years.

In the last days, since Tuesday, March 10, a special follow-up has been carried out due to the events derived from the coronavirus crisis, with comparative figures showing a normality of the situation as of Friday, March 13.

The average increase in the last four days in terms of vehicles is + 6.64% with a flow of more than 2,100 and with more than 500 tons sold daily in total.

Likewise, 9.22% more average marketing of fruit and vegetables has been registered, as well as 14.76% in meat.

Each of these companies are taking the indicated preventive measures, following the general recommendations given by the Ministry of Health, the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia and the Municipal Health Services of the Murcia City Council for the containment of the coronavirus.

Fruits, vegetables, fish and meat

Mercamurcia is the most important Food Logistics Distribution Center in the Spanish southeast.

Inaugurated on December 11, 1976, it involved a renovation in the structures for the commercialization of perishable food products in the area.

Located in an area of ​​300,000 m2, it has Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Markets, Fish, Flowers and Plants, Meat Complex with slaughterhouse for slaughter species (pigs, cattle and sheep) and Complementary Activities Area where companies that they serve traditional commerce, supermarkets, food market, street vendors and the Horeca sector.

Its operation guarantees the supply of these foods to the population of a wide area of ​​influence with nearly 2,000,000 inhabitants: from the Region of Murcia, also reaching part of the bordering provinces of Albacete, Almería, Granada and Alicante.

Its location located 10 km from the center of the city of Murcia with direct access, via the MU31 motorway, to the national network of Motorways and to the European route E15, provides an unbeatable situation to favor the development of logistics and distribution.

It also has an international connection, through Corvera airport and the port area of ​​Cartagena, less than 50 km away.

The Fruit and Vegetable Market has a total of 63 wholesale stalls in Hall A and a total of 20 stands in Hall B, with a total of 49 specialized operators in this section.

In these sections where fresh produce is marketed, various means, mainly digital, have been informed in recent days of the preventive measures recommended by the health authorities.
